Like many teams, the Cincinnati Bengals could create plenty of cap space by doing contract restructures with some big names.

The Kansas City Chiefs just provided another example.

Those Chiefs re-did Mahomes’ contract this week, converting $54.45 million of Mahomes salary into a signing bonus. That creates $43.65 million in cap space for the Chiefs.

According to Over The Cap, the Bengals could save $19.2 million by restructuring the contract of Joe Burrow.

One could see why this might be a problem for the Bengals: Turning huge chunks of cash into signing bonuses. They also stand to gain $20-plus million in 2027 and beyond with Burrow restructures (the Chiefs have done this with Mahomes four years in a row).

The Bengals aren’t hurting for cap space right now, with roughly $53.5 million in free space. But when pondering a $30.2 million franchise tag decision on Trey Hendrickson and wanting to add outside free agents, every little bit could help.

Traditionally, the Bengals don’t do major restructures like this often. But it could be another step in the modernization process they consider while they attempt to fix a roster that just wasn’t good enough in 2026…by their own admission.
