Despite having a bunch of injuries or players coming off injuries, the Kansas City Chiefs are having a solid training camp when all things are considered.
Reports from Chiefs camp have been positive, and the most positive reports of all have been regarding the status of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes missed the last few weeks of the 2025 season after tearing his left ACL and LCL, and while he isn’t expected to play during the preseason, he has looked great in camp. According to NFL.com’s Kevin Patra, who reported on early training camp takeaways for all 32 teams, Mahomes doesn’t look like a guy coming off major knee surgery.
“I think it's safe to declare Patrick Mahomes completely fine,” Patra wrote Thursday. “Every report out of camp reads like he isn't coming off a nasty knee injury, so why should we fret?”
In the various clips of Mahomes posted on social media, he hasn’t skipped a beat although he and the team will continue being cautious with the regular season just one month away. The knee brace is still pretty hefty, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him play with one at least during the beginning of the season, but all signs point to him being ready for Week 1.
Continuing on the injury front, receiver Rashee Rice participated in team drills on Wednesday but left practice on Saturday with a trainer. It’s unclear if this was planned maintenance or something started barking at him, but he doesn’t look 100 percent yet based on his route-running thus far.
Kansas City is dealing with a lot of injuries, specifically to the receiver room, so if his practice ended prematurely, that would be unfortunate news.
In more positive news, first-round defensive tackle Peter Woods has been a beast with pads on. He has been torching offensive linemen left and right and could be an instant problem.
One of his reps was against undrafted rookie lineman Kahlil Benson, who Patra believes could be vying for the starting right tackle job. Benson, who took the rep at right guard, held his own against Woods and won the rep.
He’s impressed the coaching staff and fellow linemen, getting a majority of the first-team reps, so watch for the national champion to potentially start over RT Jaylon Moore.
The Chiefs open will host the Los Angeles Rams in their first preseason game on Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. CDT.
