In an effort to get back into the Super Bowl picture, the Kansas City Chiefs signed running back Kenneth Walker III over the offseason. But early in camp, Walker isn’t the only one turning heads.
The Chiefs took a flier on right tackle Kahlil Benson as an undrafted free agent out of Indiana. Early into training camp, Benson has caught the eye of many, including Walker, via Nate Taylor of ESPN.
“He’s done great,” Walker said of Benson. “We’ve got pads on now and you get to see how well he’s doing out there. He’s going to have a great impact on this team.”

As Taylor watches Benson at training camp, he sees a player poised to compete with Jaylon Moore for the starting right tackle job. He noted that on Tuesday, the UDFA took all the reps at first-team right tackle. He held his own too, winning reps against players like Chris Jones and R Mason Thomas.
The Chiefs are paying Moore $30 million, which would seemingly give him the edge over Watson. But with quarterback Patrick Mahomes coming back from injury, Kansas City will leave no stone unturned. Training camp will give Andy Reid and company a real opportunity to determine who will get the starting nod.
Early on, Benson looks have to a real chance to unseat Moore. If so, he’ll be asked to open up running lanes for Walker and keep Mahomes upright in the pocket. Furthermore, if Reid hands him the opportunity, the rookie must be prepared to step up immediately.
“We’ll give you a chance here to learn, but if you start making [mistakes] consistently, then we’ve got a problem,” Reid said Monday of Benson. “But he’s been doing a good job. There’s a hiccup here or there, but he fixes them normally.”
