The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t used to picking early in the draft, but because of their difficult 2025 season, the team snagged a No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. They used it to select cornerback Mansoor Delane out of LSU, but it’s their second selection in the draft that should be getting more buzz.

The Chiefs selected Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods as their No. 29 overall selection, and this pick could prove to be one of the most genius moves of Kansas City’s draft.

My Take: What Makes Woods the Steal of the Draft

The Chiefs were smart to select Woods, because at this point in the draft, it was crucial that they get a player to beef up their interior defensive line. Woods has shown flashes of being the kind of player who hasn’t nearly realized his potential yet and a tackle who could grow throughout his rookie year.

Plus, Chiefs lineman Chris Jones, 32, will work with Woods to help train the next generation, and that’s a plus for both the Chiefs and Woods. Considering the Chiefs’ current lineup, Woods should also get playing time during his rookie year, although he likely won’t start right away.

When it comes to starting, the Chiefs are already comfortable with Jones and Khyiris Tonga topping their depth chart, so Woods won’t be pushed to play until he’s trained up. But, as soon as that happens, don’t be surprised to see Woods in rotation and becoming a real part of this team’s roster. Woods brings an athleticism to the position, too, that will empower the defensive line in action.

So, Woods is lining up to make a quick and significant impact on the Chiefs’ roster. The team absolutely nailed it on this pick, and it’ll be exciting to see the positive fallout.
