Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy remains with his wife in a Virginia hospital, days after she was allegedly shot by their son.
Bieniemy, 56, was in St. Joseph, Mo., last week for two days of rookie camp before he was notified about the shooting involving his wife, Mia, on Sunday, July 26, according to The Kansas City Star.
On Sunday, the coach flew to Ashburn, Va., to be by his wife’s side as their son, Elijah Bieniemy, 27, was arrested in connection with the shooting.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, Mia, 57, was shot in the left forearm and shoulder with a .22 caliber firearm. She is in stable condition, according to multiple reports.
On Wednesday, July 29, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared an update with the media pool at training camp.
“She’s doing better and great from where she was,” Reid said, adding that Mia was “out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that.”
Reid confirmed that Bieniemy remained by his wife’s side. “And that part’s important that that stays in place,” he said.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Elijah was arrested and charged with three felonies: use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding and discharging a firearm within a building. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday, Aug. 31.

Bieniemy was set to begin his second stretch with the AFC team after serving as a coach in various capacities from 2013 to 2023.
He spent a year with the Washington Commanders (2023), the UCLA Bruins (2024) and the Chicago Bears (2025) before it was announced earlier this spring that he would return to the Chiefs, with whom he won two Super Bowls.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were among those who expressed excitement about Bieniemy’s return — particularly after the team’s lackluster 6-11 campaign last season.
While on The Pat McAfee Show in March, Kelce, 36, claimed Bieniemy was one of the reasons why he chose to delay retirement.
“I still love going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out and just playing the game, you know, and I think my best opportunity was playing for the Chiefs yet again and running this thing back with Pat Mahomes and Coach Reid. And got my guy Eric Bieniemy, Coach Bieniemy back, and there’s a lot of pieces in Kansas City that I just absolutely love and I can’t wait to get back in the building with,” Kelce said.
