Chelsea’s £115 million midfielder Moisés Caicedo is reportedly facing a potential court summons after being stopped by police at the club’s training ground for allegedly driving without a valid licence.
According to reports in The Sun, the Ecuadorian also had his £160,000 Audi RSQ8 seized at the side’s Cobham base in Surrey, last Friday.
Surrey police have said: “A man in his twenties from Cobham was stopped by officers on Fairmile Lane in Cobham on Friday, April 4, and found to be driving without a licence. The vehicle was seized and our enquiries are ongoing.”
The reports also state that officers are carrying out checks to establish whether Caicedo holds valid insurance for his vehicle. Caicedo’s agent Manuel Sierra Camacho informed The Sun that “There is no comment from us about this matter. I’m sorry.” Chelsea also told the publication that they saw this incident as a “personal matter”.
If a driver holds a valid international driving licence, they can drive in the UK for up to 12 months upon first entering the country, but after that they must pass a UK driving test in order to drive here.
Caicedo joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in a record British transfer in the summer of 2023, and has featured in all 31 of the club’s Premier League matches this season. He also has 53 international caps for Ecuador.
The news comes with Caicedo’s side in action on Thursday evening against Legia Warsaw of Poland, in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League. Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has spoken about taking a young group to Poland, and his expectation of a lively atmosphere.
He said: “The players have to think they are lucky to experience this kind of game and this kind of moment. We need to experience these kinds of games. For sure, we will be a better team for it. We are very young, but at the same moment need these games to improve.
“We cannot allow external things to change the way we feel or behave.”
