Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to remove the money for MLS from the annual capital budget and reconsider the matter at their Aug. 2 meeting. By then, commissioners hope to have a better sense of whether the city will invest any public money into a proposed $175 million, 20,000-seat stadium to be built on county-owned property near uptown.

Not good news for Charlotte but makes the Phoenix bid look that much stronger.

San Diego also hits another snag:

Efforts to secure support for soccer stadiums in two MLS expansion markets took hits on Monday. Bids in San Diego and Charlotte aren't dead, but council actions confirmed there isn't yet support in the markets to get these soccer stadium projects over the goal line.

SAN DIEGO. The San Diego city council voted by 5-4 along party lines to reject a plan to conduct a special election in November 2017. That rendered moot an intended vote on Monday to decide whether to put a tax measure on the ballot to pay to expand the San Diego Convention Center.

San Diego City Council members voted unanimously, 8-0, to put the SoccerCity initiative on the November 2018 ballot Monday, instead of a special election.

Councilmember Scott Sherman did say it's possible there could be another vote at a different time, leaving a small glimmer of hope for an earlier special election. During Monday's meeting, he stressed that he wanted to have a special election but will not because legal opinion does not support that motion.
