Why has Charlie Weis become known as a great coach. Name 1 good team that he has defeated as ND's coach. Plus, whenever they play a good team, they aren't even competitive. They are looking at another 20+ point defeat against a good team in LSU. Weis' offense did nothing against Ohio State last year until garbage time and they haven't scored in the 2nd half this year. To me, he is living off the fame and greatness of Tom Brady. I think Brady made Weis not vice versa like many people like to think. You can arguably say Ty Willingham's first years were more successful than Weis'. He's typical of the over-hype machine that is ND. I'm glad he is not a candidate to be the Crads next HC. He can't even win at the college level yet. At least guys like Carroll have come in and dominated the college ranks and deserve a look at the pro level. I'll give Weis a chance when they can beat anyone other than Army.

Weis's coaching job at Notre Dame has been solid due to the level of talent he received when he got there, which isn't all that great.

However he will not get a HC job anywhere in the NFL in the next few years unless they want to pay a butt load of cash. His buyout requires that the team that wants him must pay $2 million per remaining year of his contract add on top of that the money he would want and you've got a $25 million price tag for the first year (if somebody were to hire him this year). Not happening

Frankly, I would agree that Weis is probably overrated. He's been getting a lot of credit and makes comments about coaching at Notre Dame until his son graduates from there (8 more years). I don't know if he'll make it that long because Notre Dame expects a lot.

2 BCS bowls without any of his recruiting classes getting to play is pretty damn good. Of course the outcome of those bowl games isn't. :) But the Irish will get in some big bowl games every year because they are ND. Weis won't be fired for getting them to BCS bowls and getting players to graduate will he?

NFL rumor is Weis will go to BIG BLUE if Coughlin's team blows the upcoming Sunday playoff game against the Eagles. I think it's "wishful thinking" on the part of the New York press.

weis.....the perfect "guru" created by the media. yeah, probobly a fine oc in ne...althought they sure have talent....ND cannot beat and has not beaten a highly ranked team for years...last night was a perfect example of a very poorly coached game on his part...aside from the fact he was totally outmanned....

how many of us would have loved for him to be the next coach if he was coming out of new england now???? i don't think he is going to leave nd any time soon...personal note...not to be nasty...i wish he would get some pants that fit.

Again, the media has turned this guy into a god or guru as lobo stated. I think he's just another football coach who's done a good job.

Mentioned this on another thread. They were talking about Weis on Cold Pizza this morning.

The reason ND is 0-9 in the last 9 bowl games is simple, because they draw so well they are consistently ranked higher than they should be, wind up seeded higher in bowl games, and are playing teams that are flat out better than them.

Weis is good but how many impact players has he recruited that are actually helping ND? We were all told how little talent he inherited if that's the case, and he's recruiting as well as we're told, how come that talent isn't making an impact? USC is loaded but their freshmen class have made impacts the last 2 years because they had glaring holes(like RB this year) and those touted recruits got immediate PT. ND has the same glaring holes, but Weis' touted recruits are barely on the field? Did Willingham leave him more talent than he let on, or were his recruits overrated?

That "no talent" comment is garbage. I went to the University of Arizona and a few years back they had NO talent. They're not a football school.

You mean to tell me that one of the greatest programs in college football didn't have any talent for a few years? They couldn't recruit anybody? Well, they do have the top QB in the draft. They had talent just liike anybody else, just that the top prospects they recruited didn't turn out to be that good when they hit the field. Even USC has had some bad years, so has Michigan.

Well, just look at the halftime adjustments that Weis made last night if you think that he's a bad coach. Or the opening series when all the plays were scripted. We must spend whatever it takes to get Charlie Weis coaching for the Arizona Cardinals.

Oh, you mean the Irish were shut out in the second half? And their first drive ended in a punt and the talking heads were saying how "tentative" the Irish offense looked and how LSU's defense was dictating what the Irish were doing? Um... well, we still need to do whatever it takes to get him in here.

I will say this, I didn't watch the whole game but what I saw it seemed like
the first half was Weis doing everything he could to keep ND in a game against a superior opponent. And the 2nd half was Myles making all the obvious adjustments at halftime and letting his superior athletes trample ND.

As Bradshaw kept saying the weakness in ND is pass defense, there are huge openings and now LSU is going after them. And they brought in the other RB who had more speed and got some big plays from him.

ND basically had one gameplan, we think we can throw against #19, and that's what we're doing until they stop it. LSU figured it out, gave the kid help, and that was it. Remember at the half they told us that Weis said his OL was taking control of the game late and that was the gameplan for the 2nd half, not sure if he was bluffing or what but clearly that didn't happen.

I think Weis is a good coach, I just think he did a very good job when he came in of completely trashing the prior regime so that everyone believed he inherited a team with no talent and won a bunch of games with that no talent.

I don't know, Russ. I mean, saying that Weis is a good coach it just doesn't show up on the field is what people said about Dave McGinnis and are now saying about Clancy Pendergast. Maybe that's true--and Charlie Weis is definitely a good PR guy and an asset to any school's athletic department--but I'd rather have that proven by some team that I'm not going to cheer for every week.

I thought that good coaches make their talent play better than they are, and put their lesser athletes in a position to win. Isn't that what Boise State's HC did? Was the talent gap between LSU and ND that much greater than between Boise State and (admittedly down) Oklahoma? I'm not sure.

I think he kept them in the game for a half, and then superior talent took over.

With OU the main difference is the QB, Thompson did the best he could do but he made several glaring mistakes in that game that kept Boise State in
the game.

Russell didn't do that, when he had guys open, he got them the ball, when nobody was open(rarely) he ran or threw it away.

I'm not a huge Weis fan I think he basically convinced everyone that Willingham left the cupboard bare and that any good players he inherited were due to his coaching them up. I think to an extent on defense it's true he inherited very little speed, but on offense he inherited Quinn, the WR's, the RB, he didn't come in completely barren of talent.

I also thought Quinn really played poorly, one of the experts on Cold Pizza, think it was Todd McShay, was asked about whether the LSU defense caused all that and he said no. That Quinn really wasn't under enormous pressure as everyone expected, he simply was erratic all night with his throws and his decsisions. I'd agree with that, it wasn't a game where the QB was getting pounded on every play, he simply had a bad game against a defense too good to get away with having a bad game.

you bet.....you can only go so far beating the service acadamies year after year...rutgers belonged in that game and ND is in a game year after year for one reason only...they draw...period....

my gut says weis is a good coach...unproven at the hc level...will more than likely bring talent in....and i think he will be there for awhile....if anyone has a sick stomach and needs to throw up..try and here saban's press conference this morning in alabama...don shula said it right...he was 15-17...no big loss (sic)

Plus Weis has a recruiting advantage over 95% of the othe college football teams out there.Like Russ said, his classes have had zero impact. Look at their schedule next year with a first year starter at QB. They'll be lucky to go 6-6. Sounds alot likethe Ty Willingham cycle and he got run out of town. I just hate it when guys are dubbed "genius" or a coaching "guru" when they have won absolutely nothing, much less even be competitive. I'm not a big Jim Tressel fan but the guy goes out and wins big game after big game.I like him as a game coach.I don't like his Senator type persona.

Who's their QB next year, by first year starter you don't mean Jimmy "latest in a line of busts from the same family" Clausen do you?

I saw him in the state title game on tv, talented yes but totally overhyped.

After watching Mitch Mustain struggle all year at Arkansas I'm of the opinion it is REALLY hard for a true freshman to do very well in college these days.

I'm thinking its's going to be Clausen. A freshman QB is a built in excuse for the poor record they will surely have next year. I haven't seen Clausen play but, from what i've heard,he has to be over-hyped. First year starters are going to struggle no matter what. You mentioned Mustain but others (not necessarily freshmen) that struggled were Morelli, Colt McCoy, Booty early in ther year, Xavier Lee(split time) at FSU. Those are some big times names out of high school.

Clausen was exposed quite a bit in the state title game. He plays for a private academy school that has an incredible facility. One of the coaches said that kids that go to Oaks Christian will come back from recruiting trips and say they were disappointed that the facilities weren't as good, at major schools, as they are at Oaks Christian. They are private so they essentially recruit the best players in So Cal.

their RB this year is Marc Tyler, son of Wendell, who chose USC over Notre Dame. Tyler broke his leg and didn't play in the playoffs, in the final the team they played basically played a soft zone and picked Clausen off like 3 times.
He looked very confused.

I tease about the Clausens, but their dad is a bit of a pain in the neck one of those way too involved in recruitment of his sons kind of dads, one thing to want the best for your kid, another to be acting like Marv Marinovich. A friend who has close connections to UCLA said that Karl Dorrell basically conceded Clausen to USC early on because he simply refused to deal with his dad. They were very actively after Tyler(dad played at UCLA) and they recruited Clausen but they simply refused to cater to his dad and were never really a factor in his recruitment. They didn't get him, and USC got the 2 kids they really wanted, and Tyler of course picked USC.

With all due respect

He really has only one recruiting class. His first year recruiting was over when he took the job. He has played with limited depth and limited sheer numbers and has had no game breaker at a skill position. This team is so much better coached than in the previous 8 years it isn't funny. It's all about recruiting and he is on track for a top 5 class this year if a few dominoes fall. Most of ND nation is willing to wait and see. The USC's and LSU's have stockpiled incredible talent. Miles has lived off Sabans senior class and so we'll see what kind of genius he turns out to be.

Charlie Weis has had 2 seasons at ND and lost a total of 6 games. One was to an unranked Michigan State in overtime. 4 losses came against teams ranked #1 or #2: Ohio State, Texas, USC, and USC. Where will LSU end up ranked? Weis has beaten 8 teams who were ranked just prior to losing to the Irish.

Weiss has one recruiting class on campus. One freshman started yesterday at ORT. Only 8 juniors remain on the team, most having transfered after Willingham was fired.

Let's revisit his senior talent level after draft day, shall we?

As an Irishman, I am thrilled at the back to back 10-3 records and encouraged for the future.

Will Notre Dame ever again be a perennial top ten team? No. Why? Because a Matt Leinart will never be allowed to take a ballroom dancing course just to stay around and play football.

The Ohio States, USCs, Auburns, and Floridas will continue to dominate. Under Weis, my guess is we'll compete for a top ten ranking once every three years, and end up most years ranked between 14 to 25.

Don't like Weis? Think he's overrated? Feel free to do both. Most of us who matter (donate money, watch them every week, travel to their bowl games) think Weis is the real deal.

I have to think you're the exception. I don't think most fans would be happy with 10-3 and 14-25 ranking. Maybe the realistic ones would but alot of people think ND should be a top 5 team every year. Look at John Cooper and Earle Bruce they had stellar records but the OSU fans weren't happy. ND fans to me, seem to have extremely high standards also.
