Former Dallas Mavericks and UConn standout Charlie Villanueva may have connected with Boston Celtics forward Jordan Walsh over their shared life experiences with alopecia, but the retired NBA star is also a fan of the player he has become on the court. Speaking in a recent interview with CLNS Media, Villanueva spoke about watching his growth from afar.
"One thing that I always used to tell him is just be patient, put your work in, your time will come," said Villanueva. "And now he's been doing it every year. He's still young too, he's so young. he's been getting better every year – and I know this year he had he had a good run as far as when he was starting.
"He was playing very well ... a little up and down little season, but I think he's where he needs to be," said the Connecticut alum. "He's getting better every year."
"One thing people don't like to do now in today's game is play defense," continued Villanueva. "You want to stay on that court, they're going to find minutes for you. So play defense, right? That's something that a lot of guys don't like to do nowadays."
"But he can make a name for himself on the defensive end, and he can affect the game and impact the game. And offensively, I'm not worried about him. It'll come as he matures, as he gets older. But the defense to me is what ... needs to be his signature – locking up guys."
