Charley Hull rallied to make the weekend at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open after a disastrous quadruple-bogey nine that went viral in the first round.
After an opening 6-over 78 at Dundonald Links, the popular British player posted a 71 on Friday to make the cut at 5 over in a share of 49th, jumping up 40 places.
After 29 players failed to break 80 in the opening round on firm and fast Dundonald, that number was nearly cut in half on Friday to 15. The scoring average on a friendlier Friday dipped to 74.5, two strokes lower than Thursday.
The cut fell at 6 over for the tournament, with 65 players making the weekend. Jenny Shin opened up a five-shot lead on the field at 11 under, with Olympic silver medalist Esther Henseleit in solo second. U.S. Women's Open champion A Lim Kim sits in solo third at 5 under.
"It's always been my favorite stop," said South Korea's Shin, who fell in love with links at Carnoustie. "I don't think I've ever skipped the Scottish Open."World No. 1 Nelly Korda moved inside the top 10 early in her round when she got to 2 under, but notched a double-bogey on the 17th and four straight bogeys to finish her second nine, carding a 76. Korda is 4 over for the tournament and in a share of 41st.
Amateur Kiara Romero, who needed to make the cut to have a chance to earn the last point needed for an LPGA card, shot 77-75 to finish 8 over. Romero will have another chance next week at the AIG Women's British Open, where a made cut will put her over the line.
Three-time major winner Minjee Lee opened with a shocking 85 and was 10 over through 13 holes in her second round when she withdrew due to illness. She recorded a double and a triple on her last two holes of the day, Nos. 2 and 3. Lee hit only three fairways in her opening round and one on Friday. Two weeks ago, she shot a pair of 77s to miss the cut at the Amundi Evian Championship in France.
British Open champ Georgia Hall, playing her first event back since maternity leave, shot 82-76 to miss the cut. Hall had her own nightmare hole in the first round when she made a 10 on the par-5 14th.
A number of players looking to make a late push to secure a Solheim Cup spot are exiting early, including Chiara Tamburlini (10 over) and Nanna Koerstz Madsen (10 over) from the European side and Lilia Vu (9 over), Melanie Green (9 over), Alison Lee (8 over) and Lucy Li (6 over) on the U.S. side. The European team will be selected after next week's AIG Women's British Open.
Other notables who struggled in the wind include former No. 1 Jin Young Ko, who missed her second straight cut, and Cassandra Alexandra, the LET's No. 1 player.
