The Los Angeles Chargers will have a new-look offense under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel this season. When Greg Roman was fired and McDaniel was hired to call the plays, a lot of the attention understandably went to quarterback Justin Herbert.
The reasoning for that is sound. Herbert has worked with poor offensive lines and underwhelming play-callers for much of his career. McDaniel led one of the best offenses in the league in Miami with Tua Tagovailoa, a much less talented passer than Herbert, at quarterback. Now, with both of his tackles coming back and McDaniel in the fold, there’s no telling what Herbert will be able to accomplish this season.
But McDaniel’s calling card during his time with the Dolphins wasn’t even the passing game. Miami had one of the most well-designed running games in all of football over the last few years. Even if the offensive line limited the Dolphins at times, McDaniel’s teams were always tough to stop on the ground.

That should continue in Los Angeles as Omarion Hampton will be running behind what should be a healthier and better Chargers offensive line than it was a year ago. On Wednesday at training camp, Hampton shared the advice that McDaniel gave him that will make him very difficult to bring down this season, via Alex Insdorf of BoltBeat.
“Basically just if I run full speed, it’s going to be hard for them to tackle me,” Hampton said of his new OC’s advice.
Hampton is a bruising runner and was productive as a rookie before an ankle injury derailed the second half of his season. He is a big body who is tough to get on the ground, so listening to McDaniel will make him a formidable task for any defender in his way.
The North Carolina product is going to get plenty of touches this season as McDaniel undoubtedly will try to establish the run. If Hampton has a big year, this Chargers offense will be very difficult to stop.
