North Carolina is two victories away from another College World Series trip after sweeping the Chapel Hill Regional, and now the Tar Heels know who stands in the way: USC.
The Diamond Heels will face the Trojans in a best-of-three NCAA super regional this weekend at Boshamer Stadium, with a berth in Omaha on the line. North Carolina (48-11-1) is hosting a super regional for the third consecutive season and is welcoming a traditional powerhouse for the second straight year.
USC (47-16), meanwhile, is coming off a regional championship in College Station after it battled back from the loser’s bracket to sweep No. 12 seed Texas A&M in the championship round.
Here are three interesting things about USC.
The USC Trojans are the most successful team in the history of college baseball, having won more national championships than any other program across all divisions, with 12 titles.
USC’s most notable baseball coach was Rod Dedeaux, who led the Trojans from 1942 to 1986 and guided them to 11 of those championships, including five straight from 1970 to 1974. The program’s first national title came in 1948. The 12th and most recent championship came in 1998.
With USC’s rich baseball tradition, it is no surprise the Trojans have produced some of Major League Baseball’s biggest names.
Future home run king Mark McGwire and two of the game’s greatest pitchers, Randy Johnson and Tom Seaver, all played at USC. Johnson and McGwire were even teammates in college. New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone is also a USC baseball alumnus.
The Trojans have two players in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown (Johnson and Seaver) and three future Cy Young Award winners in Johnson, Seaver and Barry Zito.
The story of the super regional will be the matchup between two of the best pitching staffs in the country. USC arguably has the best staff in the Big Ten.
The Trojans’ rotation is led by ace Mason Edwards (8-0), the Big Ten pitcher of the year. Edwards has a 1.85 ERA and 164 strikeouts, both tops in the conference. Even if you cut that strikeout total in half, he would still have more punchouts than Jason DeCaro (76) and Ryan Lynch (75).
Grant Govel (10-2) also made first-team All–Big Ten and leads the league in wins. Govel has a 2.93 ERA with 96 strikeouts.
Closer Adam Troy headlines a deep bullpen, and he has 12 saves, the most of any pitcher in this super regional.
