The NBA is giving the Boston Celtics a familiar opponent for one of the biggest games of the regular season. Boston will face the Miami Heat on Christmas Day as part of a five-game showcase on ABC and ESPN, the league officially announced Monday.
The complete schedule also includes the San Antonio Spurs against the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Oklahoma City Thunder against the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Denver Nuggets against the Golden State Warriors.
Every matchup offers considerable star power, but Celtics-Heat carries something the others cannot manufacture: years of genuine animosity and postseason history.
Boston and Miami have repeatedly collided with championships at stake. Their latest meeting will arrive on one of the NBA’s grandest stages, giving the Celtics another national opportunity to display their reshaped roster.
Christmas dinner may have to wait in New England.
Celtics And Heat Renew Bitter Rivalry
Few Eastern Conference matchups have carried more weight over the past 15 years. The Celtics and Heat met in the playoffs six times between 2010 and 2024, including four appearances in the Eastern Conference finals. Miami won the conference finals meetings in 2012, 2020 and 2023, while Boston broke through in 2022.
The rivalry added another chapter during the first round of the 2024 playoffs. Miami stunned Boston by making a franchise playoff-record 23 3-pointers in Game 2, but the Celtics responded by winning the next three games and eliminating the Heat in five. Boston went on to capture its record-setting 18th NBA championship.
The personnel surrounding the rivalry has changed over time, but the intensity has remained. Miami has consistently embraced the challenge of facing Boston, while the Celtics know better than to overlook an organization that has repeatedly caused them postseason frustration.
That history should give the Christmas Day meeting a playoff-like edge even though it will arrive relatively early in the season. Neither team will need additional motivation.
Jayson Tatum, Paul George Get Holiday Spotlight
The Christmas matchup also gives the NBA another opportunity to feature Boston’s new star combination. Jayson Tatum and Paul George will enter the season as the leading faces of a reworked Celtics roster. George’s arrival gives Boston another experienced wing capable of scoring from multiple levels, creating his own shot and defending several positions.
Their partnership will receive national attention immediately. Boston already is scheduled to open the season Oct. 20 against Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons on NBC and Peacock. Adding a Christmas Day meeting with Miami reinforces the league’s belief that the Celtics remain one of its biggest attractions.
The game also could offer a valuable measuring stick. By late December, Tatum and George should have enough time together to move beyond the adjustment stage. The Celtics’ offensive roles, closing lineup and defensive identity should be clearer than they will be on opening night.
Miami will be eager to test all of it.
The Heat have built their reputation on toughness, defensive discipline and an ability to make favored opponents uncomfortable. Those traits have made them particularly dangerous against Boston, regardless of each team’s regular-season record.
A Christmas win would not settle any postseason questions, but it could provide an early psychological advantage if the rivals meet again when the stakes are even higher.

NBA Delivers Loaded Christmas Day Schedule
Celtics-Heat is only one piece of an impressive holiday lineup.
Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs will face the defending champion Knicks. LeBron James and the 76ers will meet the Lakers, creating one of the day’s most fascinating individual storylines.
The Thunder and Timberwolves will provide a matchup between Western Conference contenders before Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets face Stephen Curry and the Warriors.
All five games will air across ABC and ESPN.
Boston’s inclusion is hardly surprising. The Celtics have become a Christmas Day fixture because of their enormous fan base, championship history and consistent place among the NBA’s most prominent contenders.
The opponent makes this appearance feel different.
Miami is not just another team on Boston’s schedule. The Heat are responsible for some of the Celtics’ most painful playoff exits, while Boston has delivered its share of disappointment in return.
The rivalry has survived changing rosters, different coaches and shifting expectations. It now gets another national showcase with families across the country watching.
For the Celtics, Christmas Day will bring an opportunity to make another statement about their championship ambitions. For the Heat, it will offer a chance to disrupt Boston’s holiday and remind the Eastern Conference that this rivalry remains as dangerous as ever.
The presents can be opened in the morning. By the time the Celtics and Heat take the floor, no gifts should be expected.
