The Boston Celtics will not have to wait long to discover how their reshaped roster measures up against one of the Eastern Conference’s best teams. Boston will visit Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons on Oct. 20 as part of the NBA’s three-game opening-night schedule, the league announced Monday. The 2026-27 season will tip off with a star-filled tripleheader on NBC and Peacock.
The Celtics will enter the new campaign with Jayson Tatum and high-profile newcomer Paul George leading the way. They will face a Detroit team that earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season, creating an immediate measuring-stick matchup for both sides.
Boston also will share the opening-night stage with several of the league’s biggest names. LeBron James and former Celtics star Jaylen Brown will make their Philadelphia 76ers debuts against the defending champion New York Knicks, while the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs will meet in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference finals. For Boston, however, the opportunity to play in the season opener carries additional meaning.
Celtics Get Early Look At East Contender
Detroit’s rapid rise has altered the balance of power in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons finished atop the conference last season behind Cunningham, who has developed into one of the NBA’s premier guards. Detroit now will begin the new campaign at home with an opportunity to reinforce its status against one of the league’s most recognizable franchises.
Boston should provide an appropriate test. The Celtics have undergone significant changes, but Tatum remains the centerpiece of their championship pursuit. Adding George gives Boston another accomplished scorer and versatile wing who can create his own shot, defend multiple positions and reduce some of the offensive pressure placed on Tatum.
Opening against Detroit should offer an early look at how quickly that partnership is developing.
The Celtics also will have to solve a Pistons team that proved it could consistently win throughout the regular season. Cunningham’s combination of size, scoring and playmaking presents a difficult assignment, particularly in a nationally televised opener with an energized Detroit crowd behind him.
One game will not define Boston’s season. It could, however, provide the first meaningful evidence of whether the Celtics’ new construction is capable of competing with the conference’s established leaders.
Paul George Begins New Celtics Chapter
George’s Celtics debut will be one of the biggest storylines surrounding the opener. The nine-time NBA All-Star arrives in Boston with extensive postseason experience and a skill set that should complement Tatum. Both forwards can operate with or without the ball, punish mismatches and take on difficult defensive assignments.
How the Celtics divide those responsibilities will be worth watching from the opening tip. Boston will not need George to carry the offense by himself, but it will need him to help create a more balanced attack. His presence should make it harder for opponents to load up against Tatum during critical possessions.
Detroit will provide an aggressive first test for that plan. The Pistons earned the East’s best record last season because they were far more than a one-player operation. Cunningham may be the headliner, but Detroit’s depth, athleticism and defensive pressure helped make it one of the league’s most consistent teams.
Boston therefore will have little time to ease George into his new surroundings. The Celtics’ season begins against the standard every other Eastern Conference team chased last year.

Jaylen Brown Also Draws Opening-Night Spotlight
Boston fans will have another reason to remain invested in the remainder of the tripleheader. Brown is set to make his 76ers debut alongside James when Philadelphia visits Madison Square Garden for the Knicks’ championship banner ceremony.
Seeing Brown in a Philadelphia uniform will be unfamiliar for Celtics supporters after his long and successful run in Boston. His first game with the 76ers also will come against the reigning champions, placing him in another high-profile rivalry matchup immediately.
The night will conclude with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Oklahoma City visiting Victor Wembanyama and San Antonio. The Spurs eliminated the Thunder in last season’s Western Conference finals, giving the final game of the tripleheader built-in postseason tension.
The entire schedule gives NBC and Peacock an impressive collection of stars for their opening broadcast.
For the Celtics, it provides something even more important: an opportunity to make an immediate statement.
Boston will begin its season on the road against the defending No. 1 seed in the East. Tatum and George will be under the national spotlight, Cunningham will be waiting and expectations will already be high.
There will be no warmup period for the new-look Celtics. Their pursuit of another championship begins with one of the toughest assignments the Eastern Conference can offer.
