Celtics get major Jaylen Brown-Donovan trade update from NBA insider originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Things got real for the Boston Celtics following their first-round series loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Many have cast doubt about the 18-time NBA champions’ ability to succeed in the long run with their Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown wing duo.
Specifically, the idea of Boston retaining Tatum and parting ways with Brown gained steam in early May, and trade rumors surrounding Brown have only intensified since then.
The Portland Trail Blazers, who traded for two-time All-Star point guard Ja Morant on Monday, are among the several teams that have expressed interest in the Celtics’ five-time All-Star. Last Sunday, the Celtics received a major update on their chances of sending Brown to Portland for high-upside center Donovan Clingan.
“The Portland Trail Blazers are the team now most closely linked to a Brown trade, but there is some skepticism,” Heavy’s Sean Deveney wrote. “The Celtics will want budding 22-year-old center Donovan Clingan in a deal, and Portland has given no indication it is willing to deal Clingan. That could be the end of those talks on the spot.”
“There are 29 teams that would like to trade for Donovan Clingan,” one Western Conference exec told Deveney. “And I am not sure there is any other asset they have where the Celtics would want to trade Jaylen Brown there.”
“The Celtics want to stay competitive–I don’t think you go and dump Jaylen for picks. You’ve got to get a player back and (Clingan) would have to be the starting point or even a focal point for them.”
Based on Deveney’s intel, it appears clear that the Trail Blazers are all-in on continuing Clingan’s development in Portland and helping him reach his full potential with the surging Western Conference franchise.
Clingan has shown promise as a patient, methodical low-post weapon, dependable rebounder, up-and-coming perimeter scoring threat, and stable rim protector through his first two NBA seasons.
The UConn product is averaging 9.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game in 144 contests, shooting 52.0% from the field and 34.1% from deep.
Unless the Trail Blazers change their stance on trading Clingan, a potential trade with the Celtics seems highly unlikely.
