Yam Madar, a 2020 Celtics draft pick, could end up stateside for next season after all. It just won’t be with the C’s. But he could surface in the college ranks. Madar is reportedly in advanced talks to join LSU for next season, per outlet Israel Hayom.

There was an earlier report Madar was committed to the Tigers and would make $5 million for this next season. But it sounds like the decision is not official yet, plus any questions about eligibility are also on the table. The price tag has remained consistent for $5 million, which was also reported by Israel Hayom. Madar most recently played for Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel and the EuroLeague.

Madar, 25, will need to get eligibility from the NCAA to compete for the upcoming season. It’s unclear what path that would look like considering his age and experience. But as pointed out by Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney, Madar could be eligible based on a military exemption and national team participation, opening the door for the guard to play with LSU next season.

Celtics fans will likely remember Madar, who was picked 47th overall in the 2020 draft. He played for the C’s during the 2021 Summer League for three games. Madar averaged 4.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.0 assists in his brief Summer League stint before an injury sidelined him for the rest of Summer League. Madar was also named EuroLeague Rising Star award for the 2022-23 season. The Celtics will still own his draft rights regardless of what happens with his collegiate eligibility.

It remains to be seen if Madar ends up playing for LSU, which recently hired Will Wade as its coach from NC State. The eligibility is the main question on if Madar will be allowed to play by the NCAA. However, NCAA eligibility has become an open question mark with players filing lawsuits in hopes they can suit up at the collegiate level.

There have been plenty of overseas pros who have played at the college ranks in recent seasons. With the rise of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) in the NCAA, it’s oftentimes more lucrative to play stateside. College programs are also willing to shell out the price tag to compete. LSU got a commitment from Brazilian center Marcio Santos, who most recently played for Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv. Madar could just be the latest player to jump stateside and play collegiately.
