The Atlanta Falcons may be the next team to embrace the hot new trend in the NFL: starting reclamation projects at quarterback. Several teams have had it work out splendidly in recent years. Last season, Daniel Jones broke through with the Colts after showing very little potential during his time with the Giants. In 2024, it was Minnesota with Sam Darnold, who finally delivered on his top-three billing.

This year there are a few candidates, including Kyler Murray with the Vikings. The Falcons have a candidate of their own in Tua Tagovailoa, who's playing for the veteran minimum after getting bought out by Miami. If Tagovailoa can win the QB1 job, it will be bad news for Michael Penix Jr., who could eventually land in " draft bust" territory.

According to Tyler Sullivan at CBS Sports, that's exactly where Penix's career is heading.

"The Falcons have an entirely new leadership group with Matt Ryan named president of football, Ian Cunningham hired as GM and Kevin Stefanski brought in as head coach. None of them are tied to making the Penix pick work, which creates an even tougher road for him to beat out Tagovailoa... Penix is 4-8 as a starter and has completed just 59.6% of his career passes. Even without considering the injury, Tagovailoa is a far more proven starter and will likely beat him out for the job this summer."

Losing the QB battle to Tua won't necessarily mean Penix is officially washed, although it may spell the end of his time in Atlanta. Penix has legitimate gifts and near-Heisman talent, he just hasn't been able to adjust to the NFL level yet. Until he gets a full season of starts under his belt, that may never happen.

However, as Geno Smith and a handful of other write-offs that have bounced back can attest, that doesn't mean the end. Penix may just be getting set up for his own redemption arc with another team if the Falcons are done with him.

Unfortunately for Penix, the third-year QB has yet to be cleared for 11-on-11 drills, meaning he will be restricted to more 7-on-7 work at the team's mandatory minicamp this week. However, Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski made sure to clarity that the team wasn't in a rush to name the starter.

"We're not giving out any jobs in June," Stefanski told reporters at Tuesday's mandatory minicamp.
