Owensboro Catholic had a big sixth inning against Whitesville Trinity to propel it to the All ‘A’ 3rd Region Baseball Tournament championship.
Catholic put up eight runs in the bottom of the sixth and batted around in the inning to help it win 10-3 Tuesday night at Independence Bank Field at Chautauqua Park. Karson White got things going with a line drive double to center that scored two runs and pushed Catholic in front 4-3.
Catholic will now advance to the All ‘A’ State Baseball Tournament, which will be April 25-26 at Daviess County High School. The All ‘A’ semistate will be before that at regional winners sites. Catholic will have to travel to the 4th Region winner.
Catholic had seven hits in the game against Trinity, five coming in the sixth.
“It was a timing thing, we started to settle in during the later innings, one by one we passed the sticks,” said White, an eighth grader. “Knowing if someone in front of you gets out, another guy can back you up. I just wanted to get a pitch I could drive, it found a gap.”
An error on a bunt from Drew Miles allowed him to reach and Karson White to score. Miles reached third on the error. Tucker Evans singled to score another run, Mason Moser singled in a run and Barrett Evans singled in another run to push Catholic in front 8-3.
An error, a hit by pitch and a walk got another Catholic run across for a 9-3 lead. Jake Murphy scored from third on a passed ball before the third out was recorded on the Aces.
Catholic was running constantly and stole four bases. Catholic is 7-2 and will be off until April 6, when it starts a series of games at Panama City Beach, Fla.
“We hit a lot of hard balls right at them, they made the plays, finally we had a couple drop in there, that kind of relaxed us,” Catholic coach Jody Hamilton said. “We just made a few adjustments at the plate, we kept hitting it hard. We just kept hitting line drives at them.
“This is the last game we play until Monday, I wanted everybody to have a chance to throw.”
Lucas Patton, another eighth grader, went to 3-0 on the season with two innings of pitching for Catholic, which used five pitchers. They limited Trinity to three hits.
Catholic and Trinity were tied 2-2 after four innings, and Trinity went up 3-2 in the top of the sixth, before Catholic went off at the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Two walks and a single from Alex Hood scored Catholic’s first run in the bottom of the third.
Landon Boarman tripled to tie the game for Trinity 1-1, and Rylan Cecil had a sacrifice ground out to put Trinity up 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
Landon Marks singled in Jaxson White to tie the game 2-2 for Catholic in the bottom of the fourth.
Trinity went up 3-2 when Boarman grounded into a double play. Isaac Hernandez took the pitching loss for Trinity (2-5). Kayan Howard was the starting pitcher.
“We started pretty solid,” Trinity coach Matt Wright said. “Kayin threw exceptionally well. It’s his first start of the year. We tried to mix pitches a little bit, we shaded our outfielders heavy. That worked for a good part of the game. As the game went on, they started taking the ball to the opposite field a little more.”
