Injuries behind the plate have affected the Chicago White Sox once again.
Recently acquired catcher Joey Bart went on the 10-day injured list Friday with a fifth metacarpal fracture in his left hand. He will miss more than a month, general manager Chris Getz said.
With Bart out, the Sox recalled Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to provide catching depth.
Those were two of the four roster moves the team announced before the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians at Rate Field. The Sox also placed left-hander Chris Murphy on the 15-day IL with a left flexor strain and recalled right-hander David Sandlin from Charlotte.
Bart suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 12-11 loss to the Boston Red Sox in 13 innings at Fenway Park in Boston.
“Really disappointing,” Sox manager Will Venable said. “Obviously really excited to have him, and you acquire a guy like that, which was really special, exciting. … For that to happen is really disappointing. And also feel for him. He’s so excited to be here and certainly excited to be in the middle of a race and meaningful games down the stretch. And had a really good, positive first impression here with him. Try and get him back out there and see what we can do.”
Thursday marked Bart’s third game with the team after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
“We’re going to miss Joey,” Getz said. “Tough break for him, no pun intended. Just to get here, getting comfortable in a White Sox uniform, pitching staff, everything that goes into being a catcher. And now to lose him is certainly a hit.
“But we’ve got to move on and find solutions. We’ve got Edgar Quero back here today, and we hope that he can step up. And we’ll continue to work through that position.”
Getz called the catching spot a “fairly fluid position” for the team throughout the season. Injuries have been a big part, with Kyle Teel limited to 19 games because of a variety of setbacks. He’s currently on the injured list with a left ankle sprain.
“It’s been challenging,” Getz said, “going back to spring training in the WBC, losing Kyle (to a right hamstring strain). But other guys have stepped up and will need to continue to step up. There’s different ways to bring value to that position, whether that be on the receiving end, throwing end, calling games. The bat gets a lot of attention. Truthfully that’s often secondary to what we are asking of those guys in that position or what we need right now.
“It’s been an area that has been fluid. It will probably continue to be fluid. Hopefully Kyle and Joey can be back helping this club at some point.”
Quero returns after being just optioned to Charlotte on Tuesday. He is slashing .194/.257/.235 with one double, two home runs, 16 RBIs, 13 walks and 12 runs in 61 games with the Sox this season.
“Everybody knows it’s been a tough year for me at the beginning,” Quero said. “The last time I went up (following Teel’s ankle injury on July 20), I was feeling pretty good. I’m feeling pretty good right now, too and I’m ready to go. I’m taking good ABs, swinging at strikes, hitting the ball well, hitting the ball hard.”
This is his third stint with the team this season.
“It’s tough, but you have to be strong mentally,” Quero said. “You have to trust in God first and trust in your ability, go out there and compete.”
Quero started Friday.
Asked how the Sox will deploy Quero and Drew Romo, Venable said, “Just kind of splitting time, taking it day by day here. I think that’s the right thing to do. We’re not going to line these guys up necessarily with our pitchers and use that as an input to see who plays. Look at matchups, look at workloads.”
This is also Sandlin’s third stint this season with the Sox. He is 2-1 with a 6.05 ERA in four appearances (three starts).
“We are going to need a lot of different arms to help us navigate these innings throughout the season,” Getz said. “We brought up Sandlin. A lengthy game last night that taxed the bullpen. It’s comforting to know that we have a fully loaded Sandlin.
“What the rotation and bullpen, what’s that going to look like come September, it’s certainly an unknown other than the fact we are going to have to grab arms from Triple A and get creative throughout this.”
