Braves trade Joey Bart to White Sox, per report

We’re nearly one hour away from the actual trade deadline and apparently the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox have come to an agreement on a deal. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com is reporting that the Braves have sent backup catcher Joey Bart to Chicago in exchange for 26-year-old rookie RHP reliever Duncan Davitt.

Joey Bart’s time with the Braves comes to a close and Atlanta has to be grateful for the offense that he provided while he was wearing the uniform here. Bart hit .188./.316/.375 with a .313 wOBA and 96 wRC+ along with two home runs. Those numbers may not be spectacular but he may as well have been Jeff Bagwell when compared to the catchers who the Braves were trotting out there when both Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy were dealing with injury woes.

It’s pretty clear that this trade is being made in order to make room for Murphy’s return to the roster, which is good news. Murphy’s bat will come-and-go but his defense is excellent at a position where having good defense is huge, so it’ll certainly be positive to have him back in the fold so that the Braves can finally have their primary catching duo for the first time in what feels like ages.

Meanwhile, Duncan Davitt is on the move just one day after recording his first career big-league strikeout, so that tells you what the Braves have acquired here. Davitt had made a grand total of two appearances with the White Sox before this trade and while the White Sox (and Rays before them) had been using him as a starter in the minors, he’d been called up as a reliever recently. I’d imagine that the Braves are going to be using him in a similar role once he does make his big league debut for Atlanta.

The deadline rapidly approaching and the Braves are getting busier. Eli White is apparently off to Boston as well. They still need a starting pitcher. Stay tuned, y’all.
