Rising Cass Tech junior Donald Tabron II committed to Texas A&M on Saturday at the 313 store in Detroit. Tabron narrowed his 38 offers to three on Aug. 8 and announced that he would make his commitment a week later.
Tabron referred to the Aggies as a program on the rise after the team made its first playoff appearance in 2025. Under head coach Mike Elko, Texas A&M has also gained a strong reputation for its strong recruiting classes, continuing momentum from the strong classes the team had under former head coach Jimbo Fisher.
The Aggies have the No. 7 ranked recruiting class in 2026 and the nation’s top-ranked class in 2027.
The Tabrons’ relationship with the Aggies’ coaching staff began when Elko started to appear on Tabron’s father, Donald Tabron Sr.’s, radar after helping turn Duke into a top contender in the ACC.
“I watched the success Coach Elko had changing the culture and the program. They were able to beat a good Clemson team, and that’s almost unheard of for Duke football,” he said.
Tabron has also developed strong relationships with Aggies offensive coordinator Holomon Wiggins and quarterbacks coach Joey Lynch, who were each promoted to their new jobs after the former offensive coordinator left to become the head coach at his alma mater, Kansas State.
Tabron also looks up to Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed and how Texas A&M developed him.
“I call Marcel here and there when he’s not busy and pick his brain a little bit about college football and the position he’s in now,” Tabron said.
Like Tabron’s freshman season at Cass Tech, Reed did not begin his freshman year as the starter before taking over. Tabron said that Reed is going to be a future first-round pick.
“Being able to do what he’s doing at a high level, especially being able to step in as a freshman, like halfway during the year,” Tabron II said. “Keeping that position, which is not easy at you know, Texas A&M being an SEC school and keep it until now. Being able to see that is definitely an inspiration for what I would want to be at some point one day.”
