There’s now another branch of the Sean McVay coaching tree in the NFC West. The Arizona Cardinals plan to hire Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their next head coach, according to NFL Network.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the two sides are working to finalize a five-year deal, which will make it official.
LaFleur, the 38-year-old brother of Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, just finished his third season with the Rams. He arrived in Los Angeles in 2023, replacing Liam Coen as McVay’s offensive coordinator.
LaFleur previously spent two years as the Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022 after being the passing game coordinator for Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers from 2017-2020.
He didn’t call the offensive plays in Los Angeles but did hold that role in New York with the Jets. It remains to be seen if he’ll be the offensive play-caller in Arizona.
During LaFleur’s three years with the Rams, the team ranked first, 20th and eighth in points scored. The Rams had the most points and yards in the league this season, the first time they’ve been No. 1 in both categories since 2001.
With the Rams losing Mike LaFleur and keeping Nate Scheelhaase, it's reasonable to think McVay could promote Scheelhaase to offensive coordinator; his current title is pass game coordinator.
