SPRINGFIELD, MO - JULY 02: Luis Gastelum #33 of the Springfield Cardinals pitches during the game between the Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Field on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Springfield, Missouri. (Photo by Shanna Stafford/Minor League Baseball)
What better time to give Luis Gastelum his flowers than about 12 hours before his promotion to the bigs? After blowing another lead late in the game, the St. Louis Cardinals have finally called in reinforcements and have promoted the right-handed Gastelum to the majors.
Good morning. Cardinals are promoting Luis Gastelum for his MLB debut ahead of today’s doubleheader, a source with direct knowledge says. Will require a 40-man spot as well as an active roster spot.

While no corresponding move has been announced, the backend of the Cardinals 40-man roster should be expected to undergo some turnover. Ryan Fernandez seems like an easy choice, but Bloom could also opt to open a spot by putting catcher Yohel Pozo through the waiver process. Hunter Dobbins was also recalled and is expected to pitch in the Tuesday doubleheader against the Brewers.
Luis Gastelum and Joshua Baez are prospects that can make noise for the St. Louis Cardinals this season
Along with today’s news that Gastelum has been promoted, I also posted a minor league update on Cardinals on My Time after last night’s debacle. I looked at the poll results from one of Doc’s posts and minor league coverage was the top vote getter for content you all wanted. Rather than me dive into FanGraphs, I invited Redbird Farmhands and Thomas Gauvain to share their knowledge of the system and, of course cover the trade deadline. Farmhands was first on it as he said that Gastelum was the answer to the relief problem and now the righty gets his shot. Gastelum was on an unreal run with Memphis, not being scored on in a stretch approaching two months. His strikeout rate backs up that performance and he looks to be a true weapon for Oli Marmol late in games.
This game forced me to publish this 12 hours earlier than planned. How good would an arm like Luis Gastelum have been tonight?@RedbirdFarmhand says it is more than time to call him up#STLCardspic.twitter.com/3yWnhweU64

Beyond Gastelum, we of course had to discuss top prospects Joshua Baez and Rainiel Rodriguez. The three of us agreed we want to see Baez in the bigs, but the opportunity and timing has to be right. While I have less concerns about his chase rate, the truth is he needs a near everyday spot to showcase his talent. What is possibly going to happen is what Thomas said, and we may have to wait for the last month of the year for Baez to get his feet wet like the team did with Masyn Winn and Jimmy Crooks.
When talking catchers, we went deeper than Rodriguez and Leo Bernal. I had specific questions about catcher Ryan Campos and what his future is with the organization. He is seen as a good catcher, but his future may be elsewhere. Farmhands took us home with a little draft talk but check his stuff out for way more in-depth coverage.
