[font=verdana,arial,helvetica]Cardinals chirping up 2005

There used to be an unwritten rule about drafting Arizona Cardinals players in Fantasy Football: Proceed at your own risk.

For years, the Redbirds would field a football team that never excelled offensively. Sure, a David Boston or Ronald Moore would come along and catch our eyes, but for the most part there were better Fantasy options at every position.

That has drastically changed. Starting with the surprise emergence of Anquan Boldin in 2002, the Cardinals have become an intriguing and franchise, specifically on offense. Arizona signed Kurt Warner in the offseason, added running back J.J. Arrington via the draft and made ex-Kansas City tight ends coach Keith Rowen its new offensive coordinator.

Suddenly, the Cardinals look like a team that could have at least four players make Fantasy rosters, all of which could be major contributors if what Larry Fitzgerald's feelings on the new offensive system holds true.

"We're pretty much doing what Kansas City does in terms of moving around and going to different formations," Fitzgerald told CBS SportsLine.com at the Rookie Symposium earlier this offseason. "Anquan and I are going to be lined up in different positions so we won't be identified as much, and J.J. is so versatile out of the backfield in terms of catching and running the ball. He has terrific hands and open-field ability, so it's going to be a difficult matchup for any linebacker out there."

Fantasy owners are all too familiar with the Chiefs after Priest Holmes exploded in 2001, and any system that can duplicate that success would be welcomed in every Fantasy league. Trent Green has posted some incredible statistics over the past few seasons. To see that kind of output from Warner in 2005 would be equally amazing.

It also sounds like Fitzgerald knows what to expect from Arrington in 2005.

"J.J.'s going to get the ball a lot," he said. "We've put a lot of stuff in (the playbook) for him so far in minicamps, so there are high expectations for him. ... J.J. will be a big part of (our offense) this year."

Arrington confirmed that while he has not heard anything about being a starter, he has been told to expect to see the football a lot.

"They said they were going to give me a lot of touches," said Arrington, who said he worked with both the first and second teams during offseason minicamps and OTAs and hopes to complete studying the playbook before training camp. He also appeared to have added a little weight to his upper body.

Fitzgerald was equally optimistic about his own play in 2005.

"Personally, I want to go out there and play a full season at the level I know I am capable of playing at," he said. "Last year I was unable to do that for different reasons, but this year is going to be a lot better for me. ... I think I am light years ahead of where I was last year."

As for their new quarterback, both Fitzgerald and Arrington spoke highly of Warner, who should provide a boost in the passing game.

"He looks sharp," Fitzgerald said. "He's a total leader and a class act in the locker room and he's been a great asset for us so far. ... I haven't had many quarterbacks in my life -- Josh McCown and my college quarterback were good, but Kurt is a champion."

Arrington agrees: "Kurt's looking real good. I've been working on my blocking and will block for him as much as I can. As long as we block for him, he should do well."

Fitzgerald was also complimentary of first-round pick CB Antrel Rolle, while Arrington touted seventh-round selection WR LeRon McCoy.

It’s been hard to get excited about the Cardinals, both on Draft Day and on Sundays, but now they have the potential to be major players in 2005.

I hope the JJ bubble doesn't burst... I hope he turns out to be Boldin '05.

Wouldn't it be sweet if J.J. has the most total yards of the "big four" running backs after the way most of the pundits concentrated on the so-called Big Three?

Of course, that's not to take away from Marcel who will get some touches.

I do not believe offense will be a strength of the team. Too many question marks at QB, offensive line, RB(one unproven another coming back from injury), and no speed at WR.

There was big talk about Thomas Jones too and many others.

Cant wait till season starts so over-optimistic talk will end.

This team's defense will carry it as far as it is going to go.

who the heck was Ronald Moore?

Perchance, did he mean Rob Moore?

We drafted Ronald Moore the same year we drafted Hearst, Moore was the team's leading rusher that year. We eventually traded him and a draft pick to the Jets for Rob Moore.

Ronald Moore was drafted out of Pittsburgh (KA) U or College.

He gave us one or two B+ (but not sensational) years back in what my son refers to as "The Day."

There are question marks to be sure but this we can "take to the bank"......the offense will be much improved from last year. We've made major changes in this unit and it just simply can't be worse than last year. The addition of Ross cannot be under estimated....he is a proven RT from one of the best O-Lines in the league last year. This is a fact.

If Leonard Davis and Reggie Wells and Alex Stephanovich show as much improvement this year as they did as the season progressed last year, we will be fine.

People like to say we don't have a deep threat at WR.....that none of the "three amigo's" have speed is "poppycock". Bryant Johnson is a legitimate 4.4. He just didn't get used the right way last year. With Warner at the helm, he'll have a breakout year. LeRon McCoy is considered as a speed guy. His combine 40 was only 4.4. Not many WR are faster than this.

You will see a quantum leap forward with the offense this year.Coaching changes alone will mak a huge difference.

I agree with Spanky. I also believe that the strenght of this team is Defense out of the gate. But once the offence gets going it will prove to be a very quick offense, with lots of movement. I don't see JJ becomeing a bust like Jones. He seams to be legit. In fact IMO he will get 75-80% of the snaps this year. The only thing that can stop him will be an injury. We have a stronger O-line, better back, 3-5 solid recievers and a smart vet QB.

David Boston I can understand. Ronald Moore never did much of anything, outside year 1 and that was less than 4 yards per carry.

I really really hope Arrington will be great. The team has not had a good one since Stump Mitchell. My God I was a teenager when he was playing!!!!!!! Nobody drafted Jones thinking he was going to be a bust for us. He had decent year for the Bears last year. You dont know if a guy is going to make it untill the games start. The year the Cards drafted Ottis Anderson they also drafted another RB as insurance. A lot of us saw Anderson's greatness. Remember who that other RB was who did not make it? Theotis Brown. You just dont know till the games start.

Teams have added good players like Redskins a few years ago. That was not enough to win. To win they have to jell and play as a team. Offensive line that is really key. Most parts of the Cards great oline of 70s was on the team the year before Coryell took over. They were not great before Coryell and Hanifan molded the line into a team. Lot of question marks on offense. I am not ready to call this offense the rebirth of Coryell's of the 70s or Hanifan's of the 80s. Still think defense will be key.

It's not like the Cards have sat on their hands during the off season, Dude. New QB,RB,OT,TE(tba) added to the fact that Shipp is returning as well as a healthy Boldin and a "seasoned" Fitzgerald.
At this time last year nobody thought the defense was going to surge like it did. Low and behold, additions like Berry,Dockett,Dansby and Macklin enabled the defense to make HUGE strides.
Why is it so "overly optimistic" to think there will be a significant improvement in with this offense?

I never said the Cards have not made moves that on paper improve the offense. Game is not played on paper. You wont know how good they will be till they have played a month or more into the season.

The Redskins a few years ago went out and bought every big name free agent in sight. People were picking them to go to the Super Bowl. They flopped.

If I am picking fantasy players I dont go with Warner or Arrington as being in the top quarter at their positions.
