Canada XI vs Switzerland – Predicted lineup and team news

Canada return to BC Place this evening with the chance to top a World Cup group for the first time in their history.

Jesse Marsch’s side electrified the home crowd last week with a record-breaking 6-0 demolition of Qatar — a performance that announced Canada as genuine contenders and generated a wave of excitement across the country.

A win or a draw tonight guarantees top spot in Group B, which would keep Canada in Vancouver for their round of 32 fixture. Marsch knows the stakes and will want his side to build on the momentum they have generated.

Canada team news

The most significant concern is Ismael Kone, who has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a broken leg during the Qatar match. The Sassuolo midfielder was stretchered off after a challenge from Assim Madibo and underwent surgery, leaving a significant void in Canada’s midfield engine room.

Nathan Saliba, who scored against Qatar, steps in alongside captain Stephen Eustaquio in the centre of the park. Alphonso Davies remains the key selection question. The Bayern Munich star has been managing a hamstring strain and Marsch is expected to keep him on the bench tonight to protect his fitness ahead of the knockout rounds.

Richie Laryea continues at left-back, with Moise Bombito and Niko Sigur anchoring the centre of defence and Alistair Johnston at right-back. Maxime Crepeau continues in goal.

Jonathan David and Cyle Larin lead the attack once more, with Tajon Buchanan and Ali Ahmed providing the wide threat. The front four combined for four goals against Qatar alone, and Marsch will look to harness that attacking confidence against a Swiss side that has conceded just twice in their last five matches.
