OMAHA, NEBRASKA - JUNE 20: Jake Schaffner #2 of the North Carolina Tar Heels and Owen Hull #8 of the North Carolina Tar Heels talk to Sawyer Black #4 of the North Carolina Tar Heels during the first inning during game one of the Division I Baseball Championship held at Charles Schwab Field on June 20, 2026 in Omaha, Nebraska. Saturday marked the first game of the 2026 men’s College World Series championship series between North Carolina and Oklahoma. In case you missed it, you didn’t miss a ton of good for the Tar Heels. The Sooners knocked UNC starting pitcher Jason DeCaro out after just 3.2 innings, having jumped out to a 7-3 lead through the fourth inning. Meanwhile, UNC didn’t add on to the three runs they scored in the bottom of the first, eventually leading to Oklahoma pulling away for the 9-3 win.
Now, the Tar Heels have their backs against the wall. This isn’t the first time they’ve been in this situation, as they also trailed their Super Regional series against USC after the first game. They managed to rally and overcome that to advance to Omaha to begin with, now they’ll need to try it again in this series.
For today’s question of the day, I simply ask: will UNC keep their season alive today?
Later today, the two teams will meet in Game 2 of the series. The Sooners just need one more win to take the national championship, while the Tar Heels will have to win today and then again tomorrow to complete the comeback.
With their backs against the wall, UNC is expected to turn to pitcher Ryan Lynch. In his last start, Lynch was solid for 4.2 innings in the winner’s bracket game against West Virginia earlier in the College World Series. He has a 4.20 ERA on the season, which includes an excellent start against VCU back in regional play of the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, OU will give the start to freshman Xander Mercurius.
The Tar Heels’ offense is also going to need to be much better this time around, but it’s fair to have faith considering how good they’ve been in getting Carolina to this point. This team has come so far, it’s hard to see them going down without a fight.
With all that said, what do you think? Will we be back here for a Game 3 on Monday or will the Tar Heels be left licking their wounds as the Sooners celebrate?
