Can Brewers play Marlins today? How air quality, AQI, wildfire smoke impact potential postponement in Milwaukee originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Milwaukee Brewers are slated to host the Miami Marlins on Friday night as MLB returns from the All-Star Break.
Wildfires raging in northern Minnesota and across the Canadian border have not set up the air quality (AQI) in Wisconsin to be safe, though, as smoke and haze persist throughout the state.
Major League Baseball has postponed games because of poor air quality in the past, so it wouldn't be unprecedented for that to happen on Friday.
The question is a little bit more complicated in Milwaukee, as well, because American Family Field has a retractable roof.
Can Brewers play Marlins today?
Technically, the Brewers could play the Marlins on Friday. They'd close the roof at American Family Field and see if they could get a game in.
The reality is tougher, though, on a couple of levels.
If any of the bad air has gotten in before the roof is closed, then it has nowhere to go. There's also the matter of players, coaches and any fans getting to the stadium in the poor conditions.
As of first thing Friday morning, the AQI in Milwaukee is above 400, which is considered very hazardous.
The forecast, though, shows wind blowing the smoke away to the point that the AQI by first pitch is projected to be below 100. If that happens, they could play baseball for sure.
Because of how poor the air is to start the day, a change in wind patterns could greatly alter the chances of the Brewers playing on Friday night, so it'll be something to watch throughout the day.
