The Chicago Bears made a splash with the selection of Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, adding a playmaking complement for veteran Cole Kmet.

Loveland, who set a Michigan school record for most catches by a tight end (56) last season, adds another element to the Bears offense, another weapon for quarterback Caleb Williams, and a potential chance for new head coach Ben Johnson to build another breakout star.

During his time as offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, Johnson was part of the coaching staff that helped elevate Sam LaPorta, a second round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, into one of the league's best. Since entering the league, LaPorta has established himself as one of the top tight ends in the league, being named to the Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro in his rookie season.

After the Bears selected Loveland this year, there's belief that they could have a tight end who can surpass what LaPorta has done in Detroit. In an anonymous survey done by The Athletic, executives around the league believe that Loveland has the potential to be better than the Lions tight end.

Loveland is going to catch a million balls," an exec said. "He will be better than Sam LaPorta. He is such a good receiver, and he's bigger - two inches taller and another 10 pounds. They will have an 11 personnel package with Burden in the slot and the 12 package when Burden is off the field with Loveland and Kmet on the field. They are set up pretty well.

That is very high praise and hype for Loveland, who has yet to take a snap at the NFL level but is coming to a Chicago offense loaded with weapons. It'll be up to Johnson to find ways to utilize the rookie to the best fit of the team and flow of the offense, but all of his physical traits and college tape show a player who could become one of the best young tight ends in the league early in his career.
