Jun. 15—***

During the final two weeks of June, I am using this space to count down the top Heisman Trophy candidates for 2026.

Let's stay in the Big Ten, which won the award in 2025.

Why is he on the list?

Loyalty is not the top reason. Williams Jr. considered leaving Washington via the transfer portal. But he was reminded of his NIL contractual obligations and decided to return to the Huskies instead.

Assuming all is forgiven in Seattle, it could end up being the best thing for both the school and the player.

In Williams, Washington has a quarterback who can lead them to college football's version of the promised land: a spot in the playoffs.

And for Williams, another year working with the Huskies gives him a shot to be in the Heisman Trophy conversation and secure an early spot in the 2027 NFL draft. That's what we call a win-win.

Williams will get tested by a schedule that includes Oregon, Indiana, Penn State and Southern California.

He is coming off a solid sophomore season, which Illinois saw in person. He led the Huskies to a lopsided win against Bret Bielema's team in Seattle.

The Arizona native finished 2025 with 3,065 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He ran for another 611 yards and six more scores.

They play in the same neighborhood and are expected to do great things in 2026. Moore transferred, starting his career at UCLA and Williams tried to. Moore is bigger and more pro-ready but they will both end up in the NFL.
