Jun. 14—***
During the final two weeks of June, I'm using this space to count down the top Heisman Trophy candidates for 2026. I'm doing it a little bit different, with the Top 10 to followed by another set of candidates that are more unique. It will make sense when I get there.
Why is he on the list?
Everything Curt Cignetti coaches seems to turn to gold. In his first season, he led Indiana to the College Football Playoffs and came back the next year to win the whole thing.
If he thinks Hoover is the right guy to replace superstar Fernando Mendoza, he will get no argument from me.
The overall help on offense at Indiana is at least on par with what the title team had. Maybe better. The big difference is that the Hoosiers now wear the biggest target and will get everyone's beest shot.
Plus, the scheduled is loaded. Hoover will have to work against Ohio State, Michigan, Southern California and Washington. All four have CFP hoes.
The Texas native is up for it after four seasons with the Horned Frogs. He was especially good his final two years throwing for 56 touchdowns and running for another six.
Like Nix, he jumped from one Power Four team to anther with both having realistic shot to win the national title. Hoover might not be the NFL prospect that Nix is ... yet.
