Summer training has officially wrapped up for Tahlequah girls basketball.

After three team camps at Hulbert, Pittsburgh State University and Catoosa, the Lady Tigers are heading into the 10-day dead week period with summer scrimmages finished. THS put a bow on the season with a strong camp at CHS.

The Lady Tigers had a nearly two-week break between the PSU and Catoosa camps.

“Our players took quite a bit of time off after the Pitt State camp, due to various activities,” Lady Tigers head coach David Qualls said. “So I kind of expected our offensive production and shooting percentages to drop quite a bit, which it did, but I was proud of the way we competed for the most part.”

Key objectives over the summer included not only finding three new starters, but also building depth. The starter situation will have to play itself out once the practice season starts in the fall, but the Lady Tigers are well on their way to establishing depth.

With a team that looks like it is going to play fast, the Lady Tigers want that depth to replenish the talent on the court.

“I still think this will end up being a team we can play nine or 10 fairly easily,” Qualls said. “We have players at every position that offer something a little different to the team. We established an identity this summer that we want to play fast and up-tempo, so you need to play 10 to be successful with that. We probably won’t have an idea of who that is until we get back to full strength, from a health standpoint.”

Defensively, Qualls’ teams are routinely solid, at minimum, and that will continue into this season. Led by returners Lakyn Adams and Raylee McCarter, the Lady Tigers play a strong press that could cause fits for other teams in the emerging shot clock era in Oklahoma basketball.

“We ended up playing good defense this summer,” Qualls said. “We improved quite a bit with our switching defenses and rotations. Still a long way to go, but there were some encouraging signs.”

The Lady Tigers missed some players at points throughout the summer, which gave a chance for players who did show up to get more reps on the court. With a lot of freshmen coming to the roster, Qualls will have plenty of bodies to rotate through the lineup.

“We missed some key players throughout the summer, so it gave a great opportunity for our younger ones to step in there and gain valuable experience,” Qualls said. “We’ll be throwing several freshmen out there next season and they had to grow up quite a bit this summer. Individually, they showed improvement.”

With dead week officially started, the main part of the summer is over for the Lady Tigers. Once the fall season starts, the Lady Tigers are looking to build on the summer improvements.

“This offseason and preseason is a great time to have players individually improve,” Qualls said. “That’s what coaches are looking for. We have several playing AAU [basketball] this summer, which helps. But we will need our players to improve both from a skill standpoint and in the weight room as well.”
