Scottie Scheffler paid perhaps a temporary price for sitting out a PGA Tour signature event.

But he’s the defending champion in a major this week, so it might be a very brief time spent out of the top spot on the Tour’s FedEx Cup standings.

Scheffler led the points list after his third second-place finish in a row at the Cadillac Championship on May 3 but took last week off at the Truist Championship, even though the venue, the Quail Hollow Club, was where Scheffler won his PGA last year.

As a result, Cameron Young returned to first place with a tie for 10th and Scheffler is now in second. But he’s only 73 points behind and the PGA winner this week at the Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia will earn 750 points. Scheffler could return to first with a finish of 17th or higher and if Young misses the cut.

The PGA also ends a three-week span in which there were 2,150 FedEx Cup points available for the winners (700 each at the Truist and Cadillac). Three of the next four events will be worth 500 points to the winner, with The Memorial in June a signature event, two weeks before the U.S. Open.
