Scottie Scheffler could keep riding second-place finishes all the way to the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

But he’d have to win that for the FedEx Cup Championship.

Besides, who expects Scheffler to keep winning consolation prizes? That could change May 14-17 when he defends his PGA Championship at Aronimink near Philadelphia.

For the moment, Scheffler’s three consecutive runners-up, the latest to Cameron Young at the Cadillac Championship, put him back on top of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup points list.

Scheffler led the points list after his second-place finish to Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Championship. He lost the lead when Fitzpatrick and his brother Alex won the Zurich Classic, but Fitzpatrick didn’t play at Doral and Scheffler is back on top.

The margin isn’t much. Scheffler leads Fitzpatrick by 34 points and Young by 60 points. Scheffler may be conceding his lead this week at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow because he’s opting for a week off before the PGA – even though he won that championship in 2025 at Quail Hollow, by a hefty five shots over Harris English.

However, Fitzpatrick and Young are the only players who can pass Scheffler this week. The winner gets 700 points and No. 4 Collin Morikawa is 704 points behind Scheffler.

Only one other player among the top 30 on the points list is not at the Truist Championship, No. 18 Russell Henley.
