After a sensational freshman season, the honors continue to pour in for Duke’s Cameron Boozer. The latest: he was named the AP National Player of the Year, receiving 59 of 61 votes (the other two went to BYU’s AJ Dybantsa).
Modestly, Boozer told the AP that “…it just goes to show more about what our team has done, just because I think that really helps with awards like this, having great team success. It’s not just about me.”
Michigan’s Dusty May said this about Boozer: “There’s no other agenda other than figuring out a way to win. I’ve seen him play a number of times this year where there’s six guys in the paint, and it’s not as if he’s jumping 40, 50 inches off the floor. His desire to rebound…to set physical screens, to play to his advantages, is as impressive as any freshman I can recall.”
Duke has now had 13 National Players of the Year from various sources, including Christian Laettner, Elton Brand, Shane Battier, Jason Williams, JJ Redick, Zion Williamson, and last year, Cooper Flagg.
