Dominik Mombeleur delivered a soaring home run in the first inning, the first of a 13-hit attack for Bridgewater, Massachusetts. And the 10-to-12-year-old Little League all-stars from Camels Hump couldn't keep up with that type of outburst.
The Vermont state champions were held to one hit on Monday, Aug. 10, suffering their first loss at the New England Region Tournament following an 11-1 setback at the A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center in Bristol, Connecticut.
Camels Hump remains alive in the modified double-elimination tournament. They will play Maine at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12. That winner will advance to the New England championship game on Aug. 13 vs. Massachusetts.

In the Aug. 10 winner's bracket semifinal, Mombeleur connected for a long home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Mombeleur's bomb gave Massachusetts the lead, and it also started an early rally. A Massachusetts runner then scored on a passed ball, Cam Hutchinson had an RBI single, and Anthony Sullivan doubled in another run for a 4-0 lead.
On Sullivan's double, Camels Hump had a nice relay to get another runner at the plate to limit the damage. Center fielder Carson Vigneault collected Sullivan's two-bagger and tossed to second baseman Mickey Brown, who fired home to catcher Levi Callens for the tag out.
Camels Hump got a run back in the top of the second when Brecken Brett grounded out, scoring Brady Hare.
But in the bottom of the third, Massachusetts scored four more runs on three singles for an 8-1 lead. Massachusetts added three runs in the fifth highlighted by Jude DeSimone's two-run hit.
Hare had Camels Hump's lone hit, while Owen Bellerose and Benji Soltsov each walked twice. Luke Schlatz picked up the win for Massachusetts, going five full innings and allowing one hit, one run and six walks while striking out one.
Essex Post 91 became just the second Vermont team and first in 23 years to reach the American Legion Northeast Regionals before falling to Bedford, New Hampshire, in a pair of games at Fitton Field in Worcester, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Bedford captured the opener 10-1 to force a decisive game, where the New Hampshire state champions captured a 12-3 victory to earn a spot in the Legion World Series in Shelby, North Carolina.

Essex Post 91, the Vermont state champions who went 25-9 this summer, entered Aug. 9 on a six-game win streak. In regional play, Essex won three games in three days including a 7-6 win over Bedford to book its spot in the championship round.
The last Vermont Legion team to play for a regional crown was Essex Post 91 in 2003.
