Cam Young fired a scintillating second-round 61 on day two of the Rocket Classic on Friday morning.

Young was in fine form on Friday at Detroit Golf Club as he made nine birdies and nine pars on his way to shooting a 61.

The 29-year-old from New York went through a real dry spell on the golf course after his second win of the season at the Cadillac Championship in May.

However, Cam Young did record a runner-up finish at The Open Championship two weeks ago, and now he is in a great position to secure his third win of 2026 at the Rocket Classic this week.

Earlier in the week, Young explained how the golf course at the Rocket Classic is ideally suited to his game.

And it seems like he was correct in making that claim.

What disappointed Cam Young despite shooting 61 at the Rocket Classic

Young made a birdie on the par-four eighth on Friday, his 17th hole.

With the 29-year-old’s length, the hole was definitely driveable, but he pulled his tee shot to the left, which left him a really difficult second shot.

Young was asked about that second shot he faced on his 17th hole of the day.

Yeah, I was trying to fly it much farther than that, he replied.

I wasn’t trying to really have it be anywhere near going in the bunker. I knew if I kept it just right at the hole I could land it hole high and it still would stay within 15 feet because I have some help behind it. The rough down there’s pretty thick.

I had an OK lie, but yeah, it was just — I feel I had really kind of the perfect club to hit it the way that that hole shape is reasonably close to the hole so I was disappointed to hit one left there.

Young still made a birdie on his 17th hole, so he surely won’t be disappointed with the end result.

However, when standing on the tee, he clearly thought that the hole represented an eagle chance.

Cam Young’s verdict on his second-round 61

Young was asked what worked well for him during his second round at the Detroit Golf Club on Friday.

I mean, most things, he replied.

It felt like I had a 10-footer for birdie on pretty much every hole. Yeah, I made a bunch of them in a row on the front nine, or on the back nine, my first nine.

Then the putter kind of went cold a little bit for my second nine.

Just really solid golf all the way through. Happy to have kind of played my way back in the tournament a little bit after yesterday.

Cam Young will be hoping for more of the same during the weekend at the Rocket Classic, and if he plays anything like he did on Friday, he will almost certainly leave Detroit with his fourth PGA Tour win safely tucked away.
