The New York Mets weren’t alone in having a performance to forget during Sunday’s 7-6 collapse against the Washington Nationals.
The popular UmpireAuditor X (formerly Twitter) account reported that home plate umpire Lance Barrett missed 25 of the game’s 334 pitches. That’s a season-high by any umpire and the latest chapter in a horrific month for umpires.
Washington pitcher Mitchell Parker walked five hitters over five innings, and Barrett ejected Nationals assistant hitting coach Chris Johnson in the sixth inning.
Although Umpire Auditor wrote that no umpire had missed more than 22 calls this season, they previously noted that Chris Conroy had 24 incorrect calls in an April 18 game between the Cleveland Guardians and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Regardless, Barrett posted one of the worst games by any umpire this year, and fans were understandably livid.
“end this guy down to Triple A for retraining,” an X user wrote. “Poor job performance requires remediation.”

Added another: “He was all over the place. In the first inning he didn’t call any strikes. [Then] as the game went on he started opening up. This guy is trash.”
Barrett’s crew ran into issues earlier in the series. First base umpire Alfonso Márquez incorrectly ruled that an apparent ground ball by Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker was instead a lineout, allowing the Nationals to convert a triple play on Friday night.
“I honestly wish that MLB would fine crews like this. Absolutely unacceptable. and MLB needs to tweak their rules about “reviewable plays,” read one comment.
