The Los Angeles Lakers dropped a critical road contest to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night as the T'Wolves took a 2-1 series lead with a 116-104 win at the Target Center.

The Timberwolves got 29 points from Anthony Edwards and 30 points from Jaden McDaniels in a winning effort while LeBron James led the Lakers with 38 points and 10 rebounds in 41 minutes.

A controversial series of events involving the widely acknowledged sound of a fake whistle in the crowd led to calls from fans for the NBA to investigate what happened and how it may have affected the outcome.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Goodwin shared his thoughts on what transpired on X as told by NBA reporter Dave McMenamin of ESPN.

"Jordan Goodwin said he heard a whistle coming from the stands three or four times in the second half before it was addressed by the arena announcer," McMenamin wrote.

"He said there was another play where LeBron James paused momentarily after the fan's whistle, assuming it was the ref."

Calls mounted for penalties to be doled out to the Timberwolves on X as fans corroborated Goodwin's story.

"Heard it on TV," one fan said.

"Hey NBA, several players tried mentioning this and your dumb (expletive) refs just ignored it," another fan added.

"So NBA are you gonna penalize them for this? This is ridiculous lol," another fan added.

"Somebody call the commissioner," another fan said, referencing Adam Silver.

"@NBA you guys gonna let them cheat?" another added, while one fan said that the Lakers should have played on.

Lakers forward Luka Doncic appeared to stop during a play, shouting, "There's a whistle!" according to announcer Mike Breen.

There isn't much time to recover as the Timberwolves are set to host the Lakers for Game 4 on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET.

In the meantime, fans will continue to wonder about whether Friday night's game was played under fair conditions, and whether or not the NBA will make a statement or announce penalties as a result of the alleged competitive disadvantage endured by the Lakers.
