William Powell is better than LSH, and I love LSH.

He can run between the tackles, LaRod can't. He is built similarly, but is stronger. As Wolf pointed out, he can pick up the blitz.

I would just hate to see Powell get cut.

That is all.

How is he on ST? Can he return kicks? How about catching out of the backfield? I'm asking because I really don't know much about Powell, but if he were to replace LSH, he would have to be a multi-purpose threat.

Powell might have gotten himself into the discussion with Smith for the #4 RB, but he's not making the team over LSH.

I liked Powell too, but I have also learned to take it easy on preseason game evaluations.. A long list of nobody's that made the team that turned out to be nobody's in the end..

To clarify, I think he can do everything LSH can do (except maybe return kicks) but he can also do things that Larod can't do. For example, run between the tackles. He's fairly adept at catching out of the backfield also. Just watch tape of him at K-State. LaRod wasn't an every down back even in college.

huh

Have you noticed the Hyphens quickness? I bet you other teams value LSH way more than Powell. Powell is a dime a dozen like Smith, replacable on the backside of any NFL roster. They know our system and have value to us, but upgrading them from the first set of cuts could be possible.

VERY different skill sets. However, I love the way Powell runs. He runs like he's 5'6" though he's three inches taller. That's hard to tackle.

If he can make a difference on ST, maybe you keep him. But LSH brings something that Beanie and RW don't, and Powell is just another standard RB.

I know Powell was the RB of the evening, but I'm still on the Fonso Smith bandwagon.

Kid looks smooth carrying the rock. His vision so far has been very good and is attacking the holes that are available and not waiting for them to develop, which is a no-no on our offensive line.

The reality is we're gonna carry 4 RBs on the 53-man roster this year because of the questionable health of Wells and Williams (one of whom will not survive the season, IMO). While LSH will likely hold the #3 spot, he's not an every down back.
I think Smith distinguishes himself in the next 3 games.

Playing against 3rd and 4th stringers. Yes. But also playing with 3rd and 4th stringers. I also like LSH, but under the new rules KR isn't as important. I would like to see Powell return kicks, just to see how he does.

Exactly! How's Stephen Williams working out for us now? Until someone shows me they can perform against #1s it means nada, LaRod has done that!

How is he doing on ST's?

Wells, Williams, LSH, A. Smith and Powell? That's a lot of RB's. I think Smith has made it on the 53, imo.

They'd have to make a cut somewhere else, like only two TE's or something.

Wells Williams and Smith. Sounds like an Accounting firm. Maybe they'll account for some serious rushing yards this season.

LSH is not a regular between the tackles back

Great 3rd down guy -- and a guy you can hand it to when the D thinks you are passing.

I suspect I know why Smith didnt play more last year when Beanie was hurt --

two running plays ( one on 3rd and 1) where is looked like the O line botched it turned out to be Smith not following the his blocks

from a third year guy?

Powell only makes team due to injuries. Just filling in and taking snaps. Played well last night for sure.

Didn't see the game/only heard it.

What I do know is that I did see LSH make some nifty cuts in Game 1, and Powell (whose long gainer and overall numbers were quite impressive) would have to be just as shifty as the Howler to then represent a bigger version and worthy to replace him.

I'd want to see Powell in action before making that judgment.

Roster-wise, it's more likely that Powell and Alfonso Smith would be the two backs competing for a final RB spot, but I'm not sure they're the same kind of RB - Smith being bigger, tougher and more north-south/Powell being a bit shiftier.

Given the short shelf-life of RB's, there's nothing wrong with overstocking the position for as long as possible as insurance against injury.
