This year’s NBA Draft class has been touted as one of the best and deepest ever. Three of the top four picks had already made their NBA Summer League debuts before last night: AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer.

The last prospect with elite expectations is Caleb Wilson, who was drafted by the Chicago Bulls out of the University of North Carolina. Wilson is a tenacious forward who plays aggressively on both ends of the floor.

The No. 4 pick hadn’t played any NBA minutes until last night, and even though its just summer league, Wilson left his mark.

The Chicago Bulls summer league team played its first game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

In his first game in a Bulls uniform, Wilson had arguably the greatest summer league debut ever. Scoring 35 points. Wilson set an NBA Summer League record, posting the most points in his summer league debut.

Wilson shot 12-for-21 from the field (57%), and the biggest shock was the three-point marksmanship. The one knock on Wilson in college was his lack of an outside jumper. That wasn’t a concern last night, as he shot 7-for-11 from three.

Despite the 35 points, the most impressive part of Wilson’s shooting display was that the Grizzlies weren’t just leaving Wilson open. Most of the makes were contested, and some were even off the dribble.

Wilson already has intangibles that will guarantee he has a long career. The highest-motor player in the draft class and the most competitive defender.

Wilson’s offensive game in college was predicated on dominating the paint, working off post-ups, and finding his spots in the mid-range. If the three-pointer is on point, even not as much as it was last night, Wilson has the potential to be the best player in this draft class.

The defensive skill is already better than Boozer, Dybantsa, and Peterson. If the offense exceeds that, Wilson is a franchise cornerstone and can be an All-NBA-caliber player for a long time.
