The Chicago Bears were back at training camp on Thursday for their eighth practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 8, including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.

We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the eighth practice of Bears training camp:

The Good

After a light practice on Wednesday, Williams and the offense "responded with a strong day," per CHGO, noting Williams kicked off 11-on-11 with an impressive play to receiver Rome Odunze. "Caleb Williams hit Rome Odunze, who beat Jaylon Johnson crossing from left to right. He then broke a tackle from Cam Lewis to go into the end zone. The entire offense was fired up and ran down to celebrate with Odunze." Williams also led the offense to a successful two-minute drill at the end of practice. (More on that below).

The Bad

Josh Buckhalter called it a "mixed day" for quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense on Thursday. Clay Harbor noted that "Caleb struggled early (high/behind Rome, INT to Tyrique Stevenson, operation issues)" but he did respond. While it was a mixed bag for the offense on Thursday, Williams' only real mistake happened during 11-on-11, when he was intercepted by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson for the second time this camp. According to Bear Report, "The ball was a little behind Rome Odunze, who then slipped on the route."

The Noteworthy

The Bears offense has struggled to close out the two-minute drill in training camp so far this summer, but they responded during Thursday's padded workout. Down 24-21 with 1:41 with first-and-10 on their own 35, Williams led a 65-yard touchdown drive, where he completed 6-of-6 passes, which culminated in a touchdown to receiver Luther Burden III. CHGO noted "the only negative play for the offense was defensive end Austin Booker’s tackle for loss on Swift after he quickly beat Loveland." Other than that, it was a near-flawless two-minute drill.

“It don’t matter if the defense knows what we’ve got, as long as we know what we’ve got, everything will work,” receiver Kalif Raymond said after practice. “Also with the time left, we can run it a little bit, too. So got a chance for that, kind of implement some run game, and then some guys get physical because they’re running the ball. I think we threw a bubble at one point and Rome was blocking his butt off, so you’ve just got guys just doing a lot of stuff.”

Here's how it broke down, play-by-play, per Bear Report:

  • D'Andre Swift 10-yard run
  • Caleb Williams to Colston Loveland for 5 yards
  • Caleb Williams to Kalif Raymond for 25 yards.
  • Caleb Williams to Kalif Raymond for 5 yards
  • D'Andre Swift run 4 yards
  • Caleb Williams to Rome Odunze for 8 yards
  • Caleb Williams to D'Andre Swift for 5 yards
  • Caleb Williams to Luther Burden for a 3-yard touchdown
