Caleb Downs has consistently been viewed as one of the most complete prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, yet late projections suggest he could slip outside the top five despite that reputation.

A recent mock draft powered by Bleacher Report identified Downs as a potential faller, and the reasoning is not tied to performance concerns, but rather positional value.

Safeties are rarely selected in the top five, with teams typically prioritising quarterbacks, edge rushers and offensive tackles in that range.

That dynamic places Downs in a difficult position. Even with a strong overall grade, he is competing against premium positions that are more commonly targeted early.

Caleb Downs delivers message to Ohio State before draft​


Ahead of the draft night, Downs sent a strong message connected to his time at Ohio State, reinforcing his appreciation for the programme that shaped his development.

The safety highlighted the importance of the Buckeyes environment, pointing to the culture and expectations that helped prepare him for the next level.

“Ohio State has an excellent tradition and a winning tradition, so I feel like that’s a special thing to be a part of,” he told Eleven Warriors.

He also said that Ohio State is “always pouring into you to make you a better person.”

Those words were not centred on individual achievement, but on the collective standard within the programme, reflecting a level of maturity that has consistently been noted throughout his pre-draft process.
