Cal Raleigh had special 4th of July catcher’s gear signed by USMNT

It is the 4th of July, baseball season is in full swing and the United States Men’s National Team is still alive in the World Cup. All three of those things came together for one extremely patriotic looking Cal Raleigh behind the plate today during the Seattle Mariners game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cal Raleigh was sporting very sharp catcher’s gear that featured the State of Liberty, the American flag and plenty of red, white and blue fireworks. Oh, and the entire USMNT squad signed the chest protector.

The fireworks didn’t end with the special edition gear. Raleigh hit his ninth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mariners social media team was ready captioning the video “is that ball the british on july 4, 1776? because it just got dumped.”

I think they might be conflating the terminology used to discuss the Boston Tea Party with the signing of The Declaration of Independence. Though if you think of the Revolutionary War as a breakup, we were the dumpers. And that’s very close to Raleigh’s nickname so in the spirit of the holiday we should probably let it slide.

Team USA’s next game will be Monday at Lumen Field, the site of the latest battle between the Mariners and Blue Jays. Last October the Blue Jays beat the Mariners in seven games in the American League Championship Series.
