UNCASVILLE — The Connecticut Sun made Caitlin Clark uncomfortable at times; frustrated her at times.

But stop her? That’s a very different task. Clark scored 25 points, hitting 10 of 17 from the floor, 5 of 10 on threes, lead the Indiana Fever to an 85-75 victory over the Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday.

Clark, coming off a 32-point performance in a victory at Chicago, was played aggressively most of the night by Leila Lecan, Connecticut’s top defender, and turned it over six times. Her frustration boiled over late in the game, as she was twice called for technical fouls. But ultimately, he scoring ability carried the day for Indiana (8-5), making its last appearance in Connecticut.

Sophie Cunningham came off the bench to score 11 crucial points late for the Fever, Kelsey Mitchell scored 19, Aliyah Boston 13 for the Fever.

The Sun (2-12) continue to fight in games, but without results to show for it. Lecan had 11 points, seven assists and four steals, Olivia Nelson-Ododa had 12 points and seven rebound.

After the biggest crowd of the Sun season had filed in, many rooting for Indiana and wearing No. 22 jerseys, Clark put in eight early points, hitting a couple of long threes, as the game started out with a fast scoring pace. Clark got an assist on Raven Johnson’s 3-pointer in transition as the Fever got some separation, leading 25-18 with 2:28 still to play in the first quarter. The Sun, as has been their pattern, stayed in the game, and Saniya Rivers’ floater at the end left the Sun trailing by one.

The scoring slowed in the second quarter, but Indiana built an 11-point lead before Brittney Griner (10 points) scored at the end of the half to make it 47-38. Clark, often hounded by Lecan, finished the half at 5 for 9, good for 12 points, with four assists and three turnovers. UConn’s Nelson-Ododa was leading the Sun with eight points.

Clark scored Indiana’s first two field goals of the third quarter, a midrange jumper and another three, but the Sun kept the pressure on. Charlisse Leger-Walker’s three at the end of the quarter made it a one-possession game again, 63-60.

The Sun opened the fourth with the ball pressure ramped up a level, Lecan disrupted the Fever’s offense, created a couple of turnovers Connecticut turned into points. Kennedy Burke’s rebound initiated a fast break, with Aneesah Morrow finishing with the layup to give the Sun its first lead since the opening minutes, 65-64, with 8:21 remaining.

Clark, out of a timeout, hit a three to put Indiana back on top. On the next possession, she drew a foul, upheld after appeal, and showed some frustration with Lecan’s aggressive defense. Ultimately, Clark hit another three with Lecan again joined to her hip. Indiana was back up 72-65, and Clark was up to 25 points.

The Sun again pulled within three when Clark was called for a technical with 2:30 to go, but couldn’t get over the hump to tie or retake the lead, and then Cunningham came in off the bench and buried a couple of killer threes on back-to-back trips down the floor to more or less put the game away, 80-72, with 1:32 left.
