The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has finally broken its silence over the controversy surrounding the theft of goalkeepers' towels during the most recent edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025).

Speaking to the show Talents d’Afrique on Canal+ Afrique, Olivier Safari, president of the CAF referees committee, addressed this scandal that has caused quite a stir.

This is an issue that the organizer must take into account for future competitions. A towel is not part of a player's or a goalkeeper's equipment. When a goalkeeper brings a towel, it should be done in a very sporting manner and with increased fair play. As soon as he starts shouting or influencing the game, I believe that towel should be kept away from the field of play.

A rather bizarre statement from the head of referees, which only further tarnishes the image of African football, already suffering from questionable sportsmanship.

For the record, Nigeria's goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and Senegal's last line of defense, Édouard Mendy, had their towels stolen by ball boys and event officials during matches against Morocco.
