Baltimore won their first game since a hectic trade deadline day.
Tuesday night marked an atypical day at Camden Yards. Just one day after a hectic trade deadline day that caught many people off guard, the fresh-look Orioles took the field against the Los Angeles Angels and faced an unfamiliar face.
Grayson Rodriguez, a former top pitching prospect for the Orioles, took the mound against his former team for the first time and turned in the best start of his Angels career. He held the Orioles to two runs over seven efficient innings, striking out six batters.
However, he was still outmatched by the opposition.
Cade Povich, who hasn’t pitched for Baltimore since early-May, returned to the mound for the first time since and tossed six scoreless innings, while striking out seven and yielding just one walk.
The Orioles had recalled Povich earlier today, as one of multiple moves that had to be made after a busy trade deadline for Baltimore. He had been placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation back in May, sidelining him from the big league team for nearly three months.
Povich shoved his way to victory in the team’s first game since they shipped off Adley Rutschman and Taylor Ward, winning 3-1. It's the third time in his career that he pitched six plus innings scoreless.
The two departures marked an uneasy feeling for the Orioles, whose hopes to continue chasing a Wild Card spot remain. However, on Tuesday, it was an acquisition from an under-the-radar trade that made noise for the team in the victory.
Left fielder Christian Franklin, who the Orioles acquired from the Washington Nationals in a trade for Joe Glassey, made his big league debut and made an immediate impact for the Orioles.
It may not have stood out in the stat sheet, but a stolen base, walk and run scored and played a key part in the Orioles’ win. He even received a standing ovation from the crowd before his first career at-bat.
"Super cool. I think that was one of the things that caught me off guard, honestly, was just how welcoming everybody was,” Franklin said, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun.
Baltimore got their three runs via a two-run single in the third inning off the bat of Pete Alonso and a solo dinger from Tyler O’Neill, who cushioned Baltimore’s lead in the eighth inning. Yennier Cano closed the door in the ninth inning for the save and the win.
Povich put the Orioles in a position to win and they came through, as they sit right in the Wild Card race. Even with some departures, the motive remains the same for the Orioles after a frenzied deadline season.
