Garrick Higgo won't have to worry about being on time at the U.S. Open as he failed to earn a tee time. However, his caddie, Austin Gaugert, is back for the next major with a new bag.
Gaugert, 36, gained notoriety last month at the PGA Championship at Aronimink when Higgo was late to the tee for his opening round tee time and penalized two strokes. Gaugert, who was at the tee on time, yelled for Higgo, a 27-year-old South African southpaw, to hurry up but to no avail and Higgo went on to miss the cut by one stroke, making the penalty that much more painful.
Despite their prior success, which included a victory at the Corales Puntacana Championship last year, the duo split in the aftermath of Higgo's boneheaded mistake. Gaugert, whose younger brother, Alex, caddies for Erik van Rooyen, picked up the bag of Dylan Wu, who he had caddied for previously, at the Charles Schwab Challenge, two weeks after the PGA.
This week, Gaugert will be at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club not for Wu but for Patrick Rodgers, Golfweek has confirmed.
Rodgers is enjoying one of if not his best season of his 12-year career but opted to part ways with veteran caddie Bill Harke, who did a stint last season with Max Homa before teaming with Rodgers.
Rodgers and Gaugert, who played college golf at Valparaiso, have done some fill-in events together before so the learning curve of working together should be minimal. With 339 career starts without a win on Tour, Rodgers is the active leader of that dubious distinction but he spoke recently about the progress he's made with the mental side of the game. He'd like to join Bud Cauley, who crossed himself off that list after 239 starts with his first Tour title on Sunday.
Rodgers has finished third at the Sony Open in Hawaii and tied for sixth at the Players while making 15 cuts in 18 starts this season. He's has banked more than $2 million in 2026 and enters the week ranked No. 51 in the FedEx Cup standings.
