Byron Buxton is playing some of the best baseball in Major League Baseball right now. When healthy, there has never been much debate about his talent. He has elite speed, game-changing power, tremendous defense, and the ability to completely take over games. The problem is that individual greatness only goes so far. And with the Minnesota Twins looking more like a franchise focused on the future than the present, it may finally be time to ask the obvious question: Should the Twins move Buxton? YES!

Minnesota simply has not looked like a serious contender. If the organization believes it is still a few years away from competing at a championship level, then holding onto a player like Buxton may not be the smartest long-term decision.
Because his value may never be higher. Trading Buxton would not just be moving a star player. It would be an opportunity to accelerate a rebuild with a massive return package of young talent.
One team that continues to feel like a logical fit? The Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies entered 2026 with enormous expectations, but after a disastrous April, they made a major change by moving on from manager Rob Thomson and promoting Don Mattingly into the interim role.
Since then, Philadelphia has looked like an entirely different team. They’ve climbed back into the postseason picture and suddenly look like a team capable of making a serious run. Adding Buxton could push them into another tier entirely.

Buxton would give the Phillies exactly what contenders are always chasing: Another impact player capable of changing a game by himself. He would provide elite defense, speed, power in the lineup, and another dangerous bat around the Phillies core. And for a team looking to make a deep October push, that type of addition matters.
Any trade conversation would likely begin with Justin Crawford. Crawford entered the season as one of Philadelphia’s top prospects and would almost certainly attract heavy interest from Minnesota. For the Twins, a player like Crawford fits perfectly with a longer-term vision:
That is exactly the type of player rebuilding organizations target.
Byron Buxton remains one of baseball’s most talented players. But sometimes great players and organizations simply end up on different timelines. Minnesota may be looking toward the future.
Philadelphia is trying to win right now. And when you look at both situations, a Buxton-to-Phillies deal starts making a lot of sense.
