Here’s what to know ahead of the Dahlberg for Great Falls High, C.M. Russell High and the rest of the AA field, as well as the top six athletes in each event heading into the midway point of the spring season.

Great Falls High’s Harris in the sprints mix

Kalispell Flathead’s Ben Bliven leads both the 100- and 200-meter races so far this year, clocking a 10.86 in the former and 22.02 in the latter.

Great Falls High’s Steele Harris hit personal records in the 100 (11.01) and 200 (22.33) last week in a dual at Bozeman High and currently ranks third in the AA in the dash and fourth in the 200. Helena Capital’s Drew Almquist is the only other sprinter to break 11 seconds in the 100 and is just behind Bliven at 10.90 and is third in the 200 — just an eyelash (.01) ahead of Harris.

Flathead’s William Hollensteiner, the top 400 runner (48.88) in the state heading into Friday, is right with Bliven at 22.07.

CMR’s Hamma near third state-qualifying event

CMR distance standout Emerson Hamma qualified for his second state event last week in the dual with Bozeman Gallatin, crossing the finish in the 800 at 2:00.00 on the nose. The junior, who is in the top 10 in Class AA in the 800, mile and two-mile, is already qualified in the 3200 (9:54.57) and is less than two seconds from hitting the mark in the 1600 (4:31.92).

Helena High boasts the top four runners in the 1600 in AA, led by Henry Sund (4:16.89), while Owen Thiel of Kalispell Glacier (9:08.32) leads the 3200. Kasen Kastner of Flathead is the top 800 runner at 1:53.97.

Great Falls High’s Conrad Schruth, like Hamma an All-State finisher in cross-country last fall, is ranked 10th in the 3200 and has qualified for state at 9:54.89.

Litzinger among hurdle leaders for Bison

Great Falls High’s Caleb Litzinger is in the mix for a high finish in both hurdles based on season-bests. The senior, who is signed to kick for the MSU-Northern football team next year, is state-qualified in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, ranked fifth in the long (41.29) and sixth in the short (15.40).

Corbin Weltzien (14.03) paces the field in the 110 for Missoula Hellgate, while Lane Chivers of Flathead is tops in the 300 (39.03).

Gallatin’s Jack Murray the one to beat in shot, discus

Bozeman Gallatin’s state-record setter Jack Murray is once again among the state’s best this spring as he leads the shot put and discus.

The defending state discus champ leads that event by almost four feet at 170’11” while also topping the shot put at 55’7.5”. Murray set the all-time all-class record in the discus last year at Memorial Stadium with a toss of 198’1” and will be throwing at Idaho State in college.

Helena Capital senior Tyler Crum, the defending state javelin champion, leads the event by six feet at 172’3”.
