The Cincinnati Reds and pitcher Chase Burns have agreed to terms on a seven year, $105 million contract extension, per reports. There are reportedly no options and no deferrals, and assuming the extension kicks in next year, it buys out two free agent years.
Burns was the 2nd overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, one pick after Travis Bazzana went first overall to the Cleveland Guardians. His $9.25 million signing bonus was tied with Charlie Condon, the third overall pick, for the highest bonus in the 2024 draft class. After starting the 2025 season in high-A, he shot up the ranks of the minors, pitching three games in the Midwest League, eight games at AA, and two games in AAA before making the majors in late June.
Burns spent the remainder of the 2025 season in the majors, putting up a 4.57 ERA in 43 innings over eight starts and five relief appearances with 2 .65 FIP and an electric 13.9 K/9 rate. This year, he was named to the All Star team with an 11-1 record, putting up a 2.54 ERA and 3.40 FIP.
